Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Carlos Pena's three-run home run in the 14th inning lifted Tampa Bay over Boston, 4-2, in the finale of a three-game set from Fenway Park.
After Javier Lopez fanned Gabe Gross to start the frame, Mike Timlin (4-4) was called on and got Jason Bartlett on a groundout. Akinori Iwamura and Rocco Baldelli hit consecutive singles, setting the stage for Pena, who lofted his 28th homer of the season just over the Green Monster.
"I was extremely surprised," Timlin said. "It was a good pitch. We pushed him off the plate, then went down and away and he somehow got underneath it. I was very surprised."
The Sox loaded the bases in their final at-bat but only cashed in on a Kevin Youkilis sacrifice fly before Jason Hammel shut the door by striking out Jason Bay and inducing a lazy fly out from Alex Cora.
Willy Aybar knocked in the other run for the Rays, who took two of three in the series and boosted their lead over Boston in the AL East to 2 1/2 games.
This team is obviously energized because of it and the ways we've won it," said Pena. "It's been exciting both days and to do it at Fenway Park is even better."
Trever Miller (2-0) got the win by hurling a scoreless 13th inning. Hammel picked up his first save. Starter Andy Sonnanstine lasted seven innings, allowing four hits and one unearned run with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Dustin Pedroia drove in an early run for the Red Sox, who have dropped two straight games. Josh Beckett yielded six hits and one run over six frames in his start, fanning seven with two walks.
Aybar's RBI triple in the second put the Rays on the board, and the Sox countered in the third on Pedroia's RBI double.
Beckett walked a pair en route to loading the bases in the fifth, but escaped as Cliff Floyd flew out to deep right to end the inning.
Jed Lowrie began the home half with a ground-rule double, moved to third on a Jacoby Ellsbury fly out but failed to score.
Tampa loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but that opportunity also went by the wayside.
The Red Sox had a chance to end the game in the bottom of the ninth with runners at first and second. However, Ellsbury appeared to beat out a slow roller to third but was ruled out.
Boston then put two runners on in the 10th, 11th and 12th innings but came away empty each time.
"We lost this game, but I'll take the effort and the opportunities we had," said Boston catcher Jason Varitek. "We had a few line outs in those situations too. (Alex) Cora and (Jacoby) Ellsbury. Those were some good balls that just didnt fall. Its just one of those things, but the effort was there."
