American League Game Summary - Oakland at Detroit

Final Score: Oakland 5 - Detroit 2

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Aaron Cunningham drove in a pair of runs as the Oakland Athletics downed the Detroit Tigers, 5-2, in the finale of a three- game set at Comerica Park.

Ryan Sweeney and Jack Cust each hit a solo home run in the first inning for the Athletics, who have won four of their last five. Sean Gallagher, who was activated off the disabled list before the game, went four innings in the start and gave up no hits with six walks and six strikeouts before being pulled on pitch count. Huston Street (6-5) got the win for pitching a scoreless seventh.

"The multi-run first was big for us," said Oakland manager Bob Geren. "The homers by Sweeney and Cust in the big ballpark was huge for us. We were able to get the key hits when we needed them and the pen kept them down."

Ryan Raburn drove in both the runs while Armando Galarraga (12-6) got the loss for giving up five runs on eight hits in four innings of work for the Tigers, who have lost four of seven.

The Athletics jumped on the board in the first inning on back-to-back, two-out solo home runs by Sweeney and Cust for a 2-0 lead.

Gallagher walked the bases loaded in the first, but was able to escape the inning without any damage by fanning Jeff Larish for the final out of the frame.

"That was pretty frustrating - he kept putting runners on base and we never took advantage of it," said Raburn. "He had good stuff, but he obviously didn't have much command. I guess he was effectively wild."

Oakland plated three more runners in the fourth to take a 5-0 advantage. With men on first and third and one out, Eric Patterson singled to right to bring home Cliff Pennington. After Rajai Davis grounded out to move the runners up a base, Cunningham roped a two-run single to left.

Detroit didn't have a hit until the sixth inning, but the team made up for it with four hits in the frame to get on the scoreboard. Three consecutive singles to start the inning by Miguel Cabrera, Matt Joyce and Mike Hessman loaded the bases. Santiago Casilla then took the mound in place of Jerry Blevins and induced a line out double play by Marcus Thames, but Raburn followed with a single to bring home Cabrera and Joyce to make it a 5-2 contest.

Street worked the seventh, Joey Devine pitched the eighth and Brad Ziegler faced the minimum three batters in the ninth to pick up his eighth save of the season.
