Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Robb Quinlan's two-run single in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as the LA Angels of Anaheim downed the New York Yankees, 4-2, and cliched the American League West title.
The Angels' earned a share of the crown with the win and then wrapped up their fourth division title in five years outright when second-place Texas fell in Seattle, 8-7.
"The first thing I thought of when I came here was playoffs," Angels slugger Mark Teixeira said. "This is a great team and I am happy to be along for the ride."
Garret Anderson finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Angels, who have won three of their past four contests. Vladimir Guerrero was also 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Dustin Moseley (2-4) allowed two runs on three hits in five innings to pick up the win. Kevin Jepsen, Jose Arredondo, Scot Shields and Francisco Rodriguez finished things from there by combining for four innings of scoreless relief. Rodriguez earned his 56th save, just one off the big league record recorded by Bobby Thigpen of the Chicago White Sox in 1990.
Jason Giambi was 1-for-2 with an RBI for the listless Yankees, who managed just four hits and have dropped five of their last seven games.
Andy Pettitte (13-13) was touched for four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings en route to losing his fourth straight start.
"He battled all day but his location wasn't the best," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "The fifth inning got him."
Trailing 2-1, the Angels took control with a three-run fifth. Consecutive singles by Gary Matthews Jr., Anderson and Guerrero quickly loaded the bases. Pettitte flirted with getting out of trouble by fanning Juan Rivera and Kendry Morales but Quinlan came through with a two-out single to left. Both Matthews and Anderson scored on the base hit and Guerrero also crossed the plate when Xavier Nady air-mailed his throw past third base.
"With the bases loaded and two strikes, I just choked up on the bat," Quinlan said. "It was a fastball middle in. This was a fun game to be a part of."
The Yankees managed to threaten with two down in the ninth off Rodriguez. Giambi drew a walk and was removed for pinch runner Cody Ransom. Nady followed with a bloop single to right that put runners on the corners. But, Rodriguez fanned Hideki Matsui looking to end the threat.
"I feel so good," Angels outfielder Torii Hunter, who signed with the team in the offseason, said. "The Angels were the team that were a fit for me. I've always respected these guys. This is a great organization. It's never too early to clinch. We worked hard to get to this point."
The Yankees jumped on top with a pair of runs in the first. Derek Jeter worked a one-out walk and quickly swiped second. Bobby Abreu followed with another walk and, after Alex Rodriguez went down swinging, Giambi came through with a run-scoring single. Abreu then trotted home with the second run when Moseley was charged with a balk.
The Angels cut the lead in half during the home-half of the first when Anderson laced a one-out double to right, advanced 90-feet on a Pettitte wild pitch and scored on Rivera's ground ball to short.
