American League Game Summary - Oakland at Kansas City, Game One

Final Score: Oakland 4 - Kansas City 5

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Joey Gathright's RBI single in the 10th inning led the Kansas City Royals to a 5-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics in the first game of a doubleheader from Kauffman Stadium.

In the 10th, Esteban German reached base on an error from Bobby Crosby and he was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from David DeJesus. After Mike Aviles was issued an intentional walk, Gathright singled to left to score German and win the game.

This was a makeup of Wednesday's game, which was rained out due to the remnants of Hurricane Gustav passing through the area.

DeJesus went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Billy Butler hit a two-run double for the Royals, who have won three of four. Brian Bannister started the game and gave up four runs -- just one earned -- on seven hits in seven innings of work. Joakim Soria (2-3) got the win for pitching two scoreless innings.

Jack Cust hit a two-run double and Joey Devine (4-1) was charged with the loss in 1 1/3 innings of work for the Athletics, who have lost four of five. Dana Eveland started on the hill and gave up four runs on 10 hits in six innings of play.

The Royals jumped out on top in the third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Butler punched a double to right to bring home DeJesus and Aviles. A wild pitch from Eveland then scored Jose Guillen, and Ryan Shealy hit a single to left that plated Butler to make it a 4-0 game.

Oakland got back into the contest in the fifth. Eric Patterson hit a one-out single and Ryan Sweeney then reached base on an error by Aviles. Crosby followed with an RBI single and Cust later hit a two-run double to make it a 4-3 contest.

Daric Barton led off the sixth with a home run over the right field wall to tie the contest.
