National League Game Summary - New York at Florida

Final Score: NY Mets 6 - Florida 2

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Pedro Martinez rebounded from a tough first inning to throw six strong frames, and the New York Mets downed the Florida Marlins 6-2 in the rubber match of a three-game set.

Martinez (5-3) gave up two runs -- both in the first -- on seven hits, with four strikeouts and a walk.

"Nothing special," said Martinez. "Just a quality outing. Lots of little things that you have to fight with (mentally). I was a little sluggish today but I managed to use my experience and make some pitches and we ended up winning the game."

Carlos Beltran, Nick Evans, and David Wright each hit solo homers for the Mets, who have won three of four to stay atop the NL East.

New York kept its lead in the division at one game as Philadelphia bested Chicago 5-3 on Sunday.

Scott Olsen (6-9) was rocked for six runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings, with four strikeouts and one walk. Olsen has not won since July 19, going 0-5 over his last eight starts -- all of them losses for the Marlins.

Luis Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and scored for Florida, which has dropped four of six to fall back in the NL East. The Marlins trail the Mets by seven games.

Clinging to a 3-2 lead, the Mets broke the game open with a three-spot in the seventh. Damion Easley singled to center to start the frame, and pinch-hitter Daniel Murphy walked with one out. Jose Reyes lined a single to right, plating Easley and sending Olsen to the dugout.

Reliever Doug Waechter came on, and pinch-hitter Ryan Church greeted him with an RBI single to center. Wright singled to center, and Beltran flied out to center, allowing Reyes to tag and score for a four-run edge.

The Marlins put two runners on with two outs in the ninth against Brian Stokes, but Jorge Cantu lined out to Reyes at short to end the game.

"We swung the bats and got ten hits but we left a lot of people on base," said Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez of his club, which stranded 10 runners. "We got them on the ropes a few times but we just couldn't score."

Hanley Ramirez singled to lead off the first, moved up on a wild pitch, and scored on Gonzalez's double to right. Mike Jacobs added a sac fly later in the frame to post the Fish to an early 2-0 lead.

Beltran got one run right back in the second when he led off with his 21st homer of the season, down the line in left. The Mets then moved in front with back-to-back shots in the third.

Evans went deep to left-center, his first career homer, and Wright followed with another blast to left-center, giving New York a 3-2 lead.
