Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Brendan Harris and Denard Span hit solo home runs and Francisco Liriano picked up his first win of the season as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Cleveland Indians, 6-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series at the Metrodome.
Nick Punto and Mike Lamb had run-scoring triples for the Twins, who have won seven of their last nine games.
Liriano (1-3) earned the win after pitching six solid innings. The young left- hander, who was making his first start since being recalled from Triple-A Rochester, allowed only three hits and struck out five while walking three. He improved to 2-2 in six lifetime games versus Cleveland.
"I feel very good. I was pretty nervous in the beginning and I feel better now," Liriano said of his emotions.
Ben Francisco hit a solo homer and Grady Sizemore had an RBI double for the Indians, who have dropped four of their last six.
Matt Ginter (1-3) took the loss after being touched for five runs on five hits in six innings of work. The right-hander struck out three and walked a pair.
After neither could mount any offense in the early innings, Harris's one-out solo homer to left in the third on a first pitch fastball, gave the Twins the lead.
Cleveland appeared to finally have something going in the top of the fifth as Andy Gonzalez led off the inning with a single, then took second on a sacrifice bunt by Asdrubal Cabrera. After Sizemore walked, Jamey Carroll and Francisco grounded out to end the threat.
"He was better today," Cleveland manager Eric Wedge said about Liriano. "He did a good job with his fastball and did a good job mixing in his slider and changeup and kept the ball down for the most part. I thought he was equally effective on right-handers and left-handers. We made him work a little bit, but couldn't take advantage in the middle innings."
Lamb's RBI triple to right in the bottom of the frame scored Jason Kubel, who led off with a walk. Brian Buscher's single brought in Lamb to give the Twins a 3-0 lead.
Minnesota added to its lead in the sixth, putting two more on the board. Span started things with a single and Punto followed with an RBI triple. Punto then scored on Ginter's wild pitch to make it a 5-0 game.
Sizemore's two-out run-scoring double in the seventh brought home Franklin Gutierrez, who singled to start the frame. Francisco's solo homer in the top of the eighth got Cleveland to within 5-2.
Span's solo shot over the right-field wall in the home half of the eighth accounted for the 6-2 margin.
"It's unfair to say he's 100 percent back," Punto said about Liriano. "We just want him to go out there and pitch. I don't want to put any expectations on him."
