National League Game Summary - San Diego at Cincinnati

Final Score: San Diego 6 - Cincinnati 4

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Kevin Kouzmanoff drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-run double in the ninth inning, and San Diego held on for a 6-4 win over Cincinnati, in the opener of a three-game set with the Reds.

Kouzmanoff finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Scott Hairston went 2-for-3 with a home run for the Padres, who snapped a six-game losing streak.

Josh Banks gave up four runs on seven hits in a 5 2/3 inning start, but didn't factor into the decision. Clay Hensley (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to take the win. Trevor Hoffman worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to nail down his 18th save of the season.

Homer Bailey was solid in his start for Cincinnati, which has lost two in a row. The rookie gave up just three runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 frames, but took a no-decision, and the Reds fell to 0-5 when he starts. Francisco Cordero (4-3) gave up three runs in the ninth inning and absorbed the loss.

Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 606th career homer, a two-run shot, while Edwin Encarnacion also homered as part of a 2-for-3 performance.

The Padres trailed by a run heading into the top of the ninth, and Cordero got lead-off pinch-hitter Chip Ambres to strike out. But he then issued a walk to Hairston and Edgar Gonzalez blooped a single to right. Hairston sped around to third on the play, putting runners on the corners with one out.

Brian Giles followed and chopped the ball into the ground, and it bounced high into the air. Cordero and first baseman Joey Votto both raced for the ball as it came back down and collided. Hairston raced home on the play to knot the game, at 4-4, though Cordero did catch the ball and throw to first for the inning's second out.

However, after the Reds closer intentionally walked Adrian Gonzalez, Kouzmanoff slugged a pitch to right field that went over the head of Jay Bruce, who didn't get a good jump on the ball. Two runs scored on the play to put San Diego ahead, 6-4, and Gary Majewski eventually finished the inning without further damage.

Hoffman entered for the bottom of the ninth to do what Cordero could not, but he, too, got into trouble. The Padres closer gave up consecutive singles to Adam Dunn and Encarnacion, then another to Votto to load the bases with no outs.

But Hoffman struck out David Ross, then got pinch-hitter Javier Valentin to pop out in foul territory, bringing up Bruce. Hoffman dealt Bruce a series of pitches low and away to get the count to two strikes, then fanned Bruce on a changeup to end the game.

Adrian Gonzalez ripped an RBI double in the first inning, and was followed by a Kouzmanoff sacrifice fly, to give the Padres a 2-0 lead.

Encarnacion's solo shot, into the left field stands, got a run back for Cincinnati in the home second, while Bruce's RBI double in the third evened the score.

Griffey pushed the Reds in front in the sixth when, with Jeff Keppinger on base, he lofted the ball just over the right field wall. Hairston homered in the seventh, though, to bring San Diego within a run at 4-3.
