Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Jorge Campillo pitched seven innings of two-hit ball as the Atlanta Braves blanked the Florida Marlins, 4-0, in the opener of a three-game set at Dolphin Stadium.
Campillo (5-4) walked just one batter while striking out six in his second straight win for the Braves, who have won four of their last six. Mark Teixeira and Mark Kotsay each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the win.
"I tried going batter for batter," said Campillo. "I know those guys have a huge line-up, a dangerous line-up. I just tried to go pitch for pitch each inning and batter for batter."
Jeremy Hermida and Mike Jacobs each had a hit in the loss for the Marlins, who had won six of eight coming in. Chris Volstad (2-1) got the start and gave up three runs on six hits over six innings of work to pick up his first career loss.
"We didn't put anything together," said Jacobs. "It is what it is. We obviously have a game tomorrow and we have to come back and try to win that one. He (Campillo) throws a lot of stuff. He was just mixing his pitches up and keeping guys off-balance and we just weren't able to get anything going."
The Braves jumped on top in the second inning. Teixeira led off with a single and was followed by a single from Brian McCann and a walk by Jeff Francoeur to load the bases. Kotsay then knocked a single to right to score Teixeira. Volstad was able to limit the damage, though, as he induced three straight groundouts, including to force outs at home, to keep it a 1-0 game.
Atlanta tacked on to its lead in the fifth. With one out, Gregor Blanco worked a walk and later stole second after Kelly Johnson flied out. Chipper Jones then belted a single to left to chase home Blanco. Teixeira then roped a double to the gap in right-center to score Jones for a 3-0 lead.
Campillo, meanwhile, was cruising through the game as he retired the first 12 batters and didn't allow his first hit until Jacobs singled to center in the fifth.
Florida got a leadoff man on base in the seventh as Hermida punched a one-out single. Campillo, though, retired the next three batters to get out of the frame.
Atlanta got another run in the ninth on Martin Prado's pinch-hit RBI double that brought home Kotsay for a 4-0 lead.
Will Ohman took the mound in the eighth and retired Florida in order while Mike Gonzalez repeated the feat in the ninth to close out the game.
