MLB Game Summary - NY Yankees at Pittsburgh

Final Score: NY Yankees 2 - Pittsburgh 4

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Nate McLouth hit a two-run home run and Paul Maholm threw eight solid innings, as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Yankees, 4-2, in a makeup game.

The Yankees split their first two games with the Pirates, but the finale was rained out on June 26. The contest actually got underway, but was called in the top of the third inning with the Yankees leading 3-1.

Maholm (6-5) yielded two runs and scattered seven hits for the Pirates, who have won three of their last four contests. Freddy Sanchez had the other two RBI for Pittsburgh in the win.

"There was a lot of guys who swung at the first pitch," Maholm said. "I have to make sure to keep the ball down and get the groundball outs, especially in the eighth."

Bobby Abreu had two RBI for the Yankees, who saw their four-game win streak come to an end. Mike Mussina lasted six frames and gave up two runs on nine hits while fanning five batters. Jose Veras (2-1) took the loss as he gave up two runs in the seventh.

"Today, I didn't have my best stuff, I think," Mussina said. "I got some breaks, I got some line drives hit at people. I spread the hits around enough, I didn't walk anybody and I got the outs when I needed them."

Veras took the mound for the Yanks in the home seventh and immediately gave two runs back. The reliever surrendered a lead off walk to Jack Wilson and McLouth followed by depositing an 0-1 fastball over the fence in right for a 4-2 Pittsburgh cushion.

The Pirates went up 1-0 in the third inning. Wilson doubled to lead off the frame, moved to third on McLouth's groundout and scored as Sanchez singled to left.

Pittsburgh went up 2-0 in the fifth, as McLouth reached on a force out, stole second base and cruised into third when Jose Molina botched the throw. Sanchez offered a sac fly to Melky Cabrera in center to plate McLouth.

NY knotted things up in the seventh inning. Justin Christian clubbed a two-out single, pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit singled and Derek Jeter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Abreu belted a two-run single to right, but Alex Rodriguez grounded out to end the rally.
