Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - David Wright hit a solo home run and drove in four as the New York Mets held off the Philadelphia Phillies, 10-9, to wrap up a four-game set at Citizens Bank Park.
Endy Chavez went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and runs scored, while Jose Reyes went 2-for-4 and scored twice for the Mets, who took the final three games of the set after dropping the opener. Pedro Martinez (3-2) got the win for giving up just two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.
Billy Wagner held on for his 20th save of the season, as the Mets moved over .500 (45-44) for the first time since June 5.
"All this is just a part of building character and strength, and letting them know that hey this is going to be a difficult task," Mets manager Jerry Manuel said.
Ryan Howard and Geoff Jenkins each hit a two-run home run while Chase Utley and Pat Burrell each added a solo shot for the Phillies, who had a four-game winning streak before dropping the final three games of the series. Adam Eaton (3-7) was banged up in the start as he gave up eight runs -- six earned -- on 10 hits in just 2 2/3 innings of work, his shortest outing of the season.
"He definitely didn't have his best stuff tonight," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel about Eaton. "He was leaving some stuff over the plate and he paid for it."
Trailing by three runs heading to the ninth, Wagner came on to close out the game and he made it interesting. Shane Victorino led off the inning with a double and Eric Bruntlett followed with a walk. Wagner then got Howard to strike out swinging and Burrell flied out to right. Pedro Feliz then hit a grounder up the middle that plated Victorino. Bruntlett charged to third on the play and came home when Carlos Beltran threw the ball wide. Jayson Werth, though, flied out to right field for the final out of the game.
"We fought back and got some hits and produced some runs," said Manuel. "But in the end we came up short."
The Mets grabbed the lead in the first inning. Reyes led off with a first- pitch single and stole second. After Chavez reached base on an infield single, Wright smacked a sharp grounder to second that Utley fielded. Utley attempted to apply the tag to Chavez and appeared to get the glove on the jersey, but he was ruled safe while Wright was out at first and Reyes scored. Damion Easley later roped a single to right that scored Chavez for a 2-0 lead.
New York continued to pour it on in the second inning. Fernando Tatis led off with a single and Brian Schneider followed with a grounder that was an apparent double-play ball. But Tatis was able to break it up and New York again had a man at first. Reyes then worked a walk and Chavez followed with a single to bring home Schneider. Wright roped a double into the left field corner to clear the bases for a 5-0 lead.
It was more of the same for the Mets in the third. With runners on first and third and one out, Schneider grounded out to score Carlos Delgado. Martinez then hit a grounder that went between the legs of third baseman Greg Dobbs and into left field, allowing Tatis to score. Chavez later smacked a single to center to bring home Martinez for an 8-0 lead.
The Phillies got a run in the fourth inning on Utley's 25th home run of the season, a leadoff shot into the right field stands.
Clay Condrey, who came on in the third to record the final out, pitched the fourth and fifth inning before giving the ball to R.J. Swindle, who was making his MLB debut in the sixth.
Swindle's first batter was Wright, who pulled a pitch just over the left field wall. Later in the frame, Martinez helped his cause with a single to center that scored Beltran for a 10-1 lead.
Burrell made it an eight-run game in the sixth with a solo shot that cleared the left-center fence and the Phils chipped away at the lead some more in the seventh.
Jimmy Rollins hit a one-out single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Victorino then doubled to the right-field corner to score Rollins. After Bruntlett grounded out, Howard blasted the ball deep to right. The ball appeared to be touched by a fan leaning over the wall and it was initially called a ground-rule double. After the umpires huddled, Howard was awarded a home run and it was a 10-5 game.
Philadelphia cut further into its deficit in the eighth as Werth singled and Jenkins later homered over the center field wall to make it a 10-7 contest.
