Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Mark Teixeira ended the longest game in Turner Field history with a bases-loaded single off the top of the wall in left- center, sending the Atlanta Braves to a 7-6, 17-inning victory over the Houston Astros in the finale of a three-game set.
Teixeira finished with three hits and three runs batted in while Chipper Jones reached base seven times with three hits, four walks, three runs scored and two RBI. Yunel Escobar tied the game at six in the eighth with a two-run single for Atlanta, which took two of three from Houston. Teixeira's long single made a winner of Royce Ring (2-1), who pitched a scoreless 17th inning.
"It was a good win for us," Teixeira said. "I was just trying to get a ball in the zone and hit it in the air."
Ty Wigginton slugged a grand slam in a three-hit effort while Carlos Lee and Brad Ausmus collected RBI hits for Houston, which has dropped five of six.
Atlanta rallied in the 17th off Tim Byrdak (2-1), loading the bases on three consecutive singles from Gregor Blanco, Escobar and Jones before Teixeira's narrowly missed grand slam off the wall allowed Blanco to trot home for the winning run.
"I made a mistake," Byrdak said. "(I) should have thrown him a breaking ball in that situation. Bottom line is he (Teixeira) beat us."
Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez surrendered three runs on seven hits and two walks but had to be lifted with 107 pitches after just 5 1/3 innings. Braves starter Charlie Morton was tagged for six runs on eight hits and two walks over six frames.
Atlanta put a run on the board in the first after a one hour and 50 minute rain delay to start the game. Jones stroked a two-out, solo home run just over the fence in left-center.
Houston took the lead with a five-run third inning. Mark Loretta started a two-out rally with a single, moved to second when Hunter Pence walked and scored on a Lee RBI single to left. Darin Erstad walked to load the bases before Wigginton took a Morton slider deep into the seats in left for a grand slam and a four-run advantage.
Atlanta answered in the home half with a pair of runs. Blanco opened with a single and came around to score when Jones tripled to the gap in right-center two batters later. Teixeira then flared a single to left, plating Jones.
In the sixth, David Newhan ripped a two-out double to center and scored on an Ausmus RBI single to right, allowing the Astros to extend their lead to three.
The Braves strung together three runs in the seventh and eighth to tie the game at six. Jones drew a two-out walk from Wesley Wright in the seventh and scored on a Teixeira double to the gap in left-center.
In the eighth, Martin Prado started things with a single and pinch-hitter Kelly Johnson worked a one-out walk from Doug Brocail. After pinch-hitter Brian McCann went down on strikes, Jose Valverde came on to walk Blanco and load the bases. Escobar followed with a game-tying two-run single.
Both teams posted zeros through the first five extra frames with incredible defensive plays from Houston's Miguel Tejada in the 11th and a run-saving diving stab by Atlanta's Escobar in the 15th.
Atlanta loaded the bases with two out in the home 15th but Jason Perry went down swinging to extend the affair.
