St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Aramis Ramirez drove in three runs and Sean Marshall picked up his first win of the season with six stellar innings, as the Chicago Cubs took two of three from St. Louis with a 7-1 victory in the series finale at Busch Stadium.
Marshall (1-2) kept the Cardinal bats off-balance, allowing only one run on six hits and a walk. The lefty fanned four in his third start of the season.
Geovany Soto added a solo home run while Derrek Lee and Ryan Theriot both had three hits apiece in the win for Chicago, which has split its last eight games overall. Earlier in the day, it was announced that the Cubs would be sending a club record seven players to the 79th Major League Baseball All-Star Game, to be held July 15 at Yankee Stadium.
Todd Wellemeyer (7-4) couldn't keep Chicago off the basepaths, allowing three runs on nine hits in five innings. The right-hander had three strikeouts in extending his personal winless streak to four straight starts.
"They were swinging better than we were and had better pitches to hit than we did," Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa said of the Cubs. "It turned out not to be much of a contest. We were going after it, we just wound up on the wrong side of things. Part of our improvement is being able to adjust better than we did in this series."
Ryan Ludwick accounted for the Cardinals lone run with a solo homer while Adam Kennedy had two hits for St. Louis, which has dropped three of four.
Chicago took an early 2-0 lead with runs in the second and third. Ramirez doubled to center leading off the second and scored on a Mark DeRosa single to right two batters later. In the third, Reed Johnson and Theriot hit back-to- back singles and Ramirez plated a run with a two-out single to left.
The Cubs added a run in the fifth. After loading the bases with three consecutive singles, Ramirez lofted a sacrifice fly to center. Soto grounded into an inning-ending double play, limiting the damage.
St. Louis got on the board in the sixth, courtesy of a Ludwick solo homer over the left field fence. The Cubs came back to erase that run in the seventh with a Lee two-out, RBI double off Chris Perez. Kosuke Fukudome led the frame off with a single and scored.
Russ Springer came on in the eighth and Soto clubbed his second pitch into the seats in left for a home run. A throwing error by Springer with two outs allowed another run to score, giving the Cubs a 6-1 lead.
Theriot and Lee opened the ninth with singles off Brad Thompson, and Ramirez plated a run with his second sacrifice fly of the game.
