Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Edgar Gonzalez belted two solo home runs, the second as part of a seven-run ninth to break open a tie game, as the San Diego Padres outslugged the Colorado Rockies, 15-8, in the opener of a three-game set between two teams badly in need of a win.
Edgar Gonzalez was 4-for-5 with three RBI and Jody Gerut had a three-run homer and finished four RBI and two runs scored. Brian Giles added four hits with an RBI and a run scored while Kevin Kouzmanoff was 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored for San Diego. The Padres snapped an eight-game losing streak with only the team's second win in the last 14 games. Heath Bell (6-3) inherited the win, tossing a scoreless eighth prior to San Diego's punishing ninth.
"That's a relief," Edgar Gonzalez said of the Pads snapping their losing streak. "We had eight in a row, and we're struggling, but we all erupted today. I think we knew it was only a matter of time."
Brad Hawpe hit a three-run homer and Chris Iannetta stroked a three-run double while Todd Helton and Troy Tulowitzki added RBI hits for Colorado, which has now lost eight straight and nine of ten overall. Brian Fuentes (1-4) took the loss, allowing the Padres to bust open a tie game with five runs on five hits in just one-third of an inning.
Padres starter Greg Maddux was slammed for eight runs on eight hits and three walks in just 4 2/3 innings to remain winless since May 10, going 0-3 over his last 10 starts. The Rockies' Jorge De La Rosa was equally unimpressive, giving up six runs on 11 hits over five-plus frames in the no-decision.
The game remained tied until Fuentes came on in the ninth. Adrian Gonzalez and Kouzmanoff started the frame with singles before a fielder's choice out. Khalil Greene, Michael Barrett and pinch-hitter Craig Stansberry strung together consecutive RBI hits to end Fuentes' outing.
Luis Vizcaino took the hill and gave up a three-run homer to Gerut, who powered the ball over the right field wall. Edgar Gonzalez followed with his second solo home run of the game to complete the seven-run frame.
"At the end of the day, it's about relationships, and the team wanting to hold it together more than anything," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "That's the challenge. They need to show up for one another and dig their way out of this."
Edgar Gonzalez took De La Rosa deep in the first, depositing a 3-2 fastball over the center field wall.
Colorado answered with a three-spot in the bottom half. Maddux loaded the bases on two walks and a single before Chris Iannetta stroked a two-out, bases-clearing double to left.
The Pads tied it up with two runs in the third. Edgar Gonzalez and Giles hit back-to-back two-out singles and Adrian Gonzalez and Kouzmanoff followed with consecutive RBI singles.
The Rox' went back on top in the home half when Hawpe blasted a three-run homer deep and out to right-center. Helton singled and Matt Holliday walked prior to Hawpe's at-bat.
Colorado added runs in the fourth and fifth frames on a Helton RBI double and a Tulowitzki RBI single, respectively.
San Diego rallied for five runs in the sixth to tie the game at eight. Kouzmanoff led off with a solo shot to left and consecutive singles from Chase Headley and Greene chased De La Rosa in favor of Ryan Speier. A walk loaded the bases for pinch-hitter Tony Clark, who plated a run with an RBI single and Manuel Corpas entered for Colorado. A run scoring fielder's choice from Gerut preceded consecutive RBI singles from Edgar Gonzalez and Giles.
