Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - After giving up four runs in the top of the ninth, the Detroit Tigers scored two runs on Miguel Cabrera's one-out double in the bottom half to defeat the Colorado Rockies, 7-6, in the middle installment of a three-game interleague set from Comerica Park.
"It feels good," Cabrera said. "We were able to win the game. I went up there to swing hard and try to put my best swing on."
Edgar Renteria finished 3-for-5 and scored a run for the Tigers, who own a 16-4 mark over their last 20 contests. Placido Polanco was 2-for-5 and scored twice. Magglio Ordonez singled in his over plate appearance before leaving in the third due to right oblique spasms. He was replaced by Ryan Raburn, who clubbed his first career grand slam and scored the winning run.
Detroit starter Justin Verlander went 5 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Todd Jones blew his first save of the season after he gave up four runs in only two-thirds of an inning. The rally made a winner out of Freddy Dolsi (1-2), who recorded the final out in the top of the ninth.
"The team won despite of me," Jones said. "I was just terrible. Every player played well out there but me."
With a record of 40-40, the Tigers reached the .500 plateau for the first time in 2008.
Willy Taveras was 3-for-6 and knocked in two runs for the Rockies, who have dropped six in a row. Chris Iannetta had three hits, including a double that drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth. Matt Holliday finished 2- for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Ryan Spilborghs scored two runs and knocked in another.
Jeff Francis gave up five runs -- four earned -- on 11 hits over six innings for Colorado. Brian Fuentes (1-3) surrendered two runs in the bottom of the ninth to take the loss. It was his fourth blown save of the season.
Ahead 5-2, the Tigers sent out Jones to the mound in the ninth. The veteran closer retired the first batter, but gave up a double to Todd Helton, who came around to score on a single by Holliday. After Brad Hawpe grounded out, Garrett Atkins worked a walk and Spilborghs followed with an RBI single under the glove of third baseman Carlos Guillen.
A bloop single by Jeff Baker produced the tying run and Iannetta's double down the right field line gave the Rockies a 6-5 lead. Dolsi was summoned from the bullpen and promptly walked Troy Tulowitzki to load the bases. Taveras then grounded into a fielder's choice, but the damage had already been done.
Polanco stroked a leadoff single to left and, after Guillen flied out, Raburn drew a walk. Cabrera then jumped on first-pitch fastball and lined a two-run double to the gap in right-center to win the game.
"It's all on me, I put myself in that situation," Fuentes said. "I was trying to get him (Cabrera) out. I didn't want to walk him. I threw him a fastball but I got it up. I just didn't hit my spot."
Verlander wiggled out of a jam in the top of the third. Tulowitzki doubled off the wall in right to begin the frame and snap an 0-for-13 skid. Ordonez was injured on the play and replaced by Raburn. After the delay, Taveras reached on a bunt single, but was caught trying to steal second. Verlander then got Helton to ground out and fanned Holliday to end the inning.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the home third. Polanco led off with a single and Guillen was safe on a fielder's choice. Raburn then reached on an infield single and took second on Francis' throwing error, which allowed Polanco to score. Francis settled down and retired the next three batters to avoid further trouble.
Detroit extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth on Raburn's third home run of the season. The inning began with a single by Ivan Rodriguez, then Curtis Granderson grounded into a fielder's choice. A base hit by Renteria and a two-out walk to Guillen loaded the bases for Raburn, who drove a 1-2 changeup over the left field wall.
Baker walked to start the next frame and Iannetta followed with a base hit. After Tulowitzki grounded into a fielder's choice, Taveras lined a single to center field to make it a 5-1 game.
Rodriguez was thrown out at home to finish the bottom of the fifth, and Taveras' infield single narrowed the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the sixth.
