Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Carlos Quentin's seventh-inning solo homer was the difference, as the Chicago White Sox clipped the Chicago Cubs, 6-5, in the middle test of a three-game interleague set from U.S. Cellular Field.
Facing Carlos Marmol (1-3), Quentin began the frame by reaching out and pulling a ball over the right-field wall to break a 5-5 deadlock.
"For a while the shadows were strong and affected the hitters," Quentin noted. "It was a defensive swing at a fastball and it went out."
Scott Linebrink retired the Cubs in order in the eighth, then Lee led off the ninth with a double. Daryle Ward's groundout moved the tying run to third, then Aramis Ramirez grounded out and Ward was stranded. Jim Edmonds followed by grounding meekly to second to end the game to give Bobby Jenks his 18th save.
Jermaine Dye homered and drove in two runs for the White Sox, who have taken the first two games of the series and have won four of their last five overall.
Orlando Cabrera and Alexei Ramirez also added an RBI each while Matt Thornton (4-1) got the win by striking out four without allowing a hit in 1 2/3 relief innings. Starter Javier Vazquez yielded nine hits and five runs over 4 1/3 frames.
Lee tied a career high by going 5-for-5 and drove in three runs for the Cubs, who have dropped four of five. Ward added two hits and an RBI while Mark DeRosa hit safely twice, scored two runs and also knocked in one.
"I would have rather gotten one hit and win the game, so it doesn't really make a difference," said a nonplussed Lee about his feat.
The Cubs got to Vazquez in the first inning, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Fukudome walked and DeRosa singled. Lee slapped a base hit to right to plate the first run, then Ward followed with another base hit which scored DeRosa.
However, the Sox struck back with three in their turn on Dye's two-run shot and Crede's run-scoring double two batters later.
Cabrera's second-inning RBI double pushed the Sox advantage to two, but the North Siders took a 5-4 edge in the fourth when DeRosa singled in Mike Fontenot and Lee's double brought in two more.
Not to be outdone, the Sox knotted the game in their turn at bat when Ramirez belted a leadoff blast to left.
