Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Garrett Olson allowed just one run in five innings to go along with an RBI and a run scored at the plate, as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Washington Nationals, 9-1, in the middle contest of a three-game set.
Olson (6-3) pitched five innings, all before a one hour, three minute rain delay, striking out five and walking three with six hits for the Orioles, who got revenge for a series opening loss to the Nationals.
"I battled a little bit out there. I felt like I was getting ahead of guys OK, but got deep in the counts on a few hitters," Olson said. "I walked the pitcher twice. I should have been more agressive there."
Adam Jones recorded a hit and a run in each of his first three at bats while Ramon Hernandez and Luke Scott each homered for Baltimore.
"Recently I have been seeing the ball good. They usually try to get me 0-2 and get me to chase a high fastball, changups or whatever," Jones said. "I'm not chasing those and it's making my at-bats a little bit better."
Washington's John Lannan (4-9) also lasted five innings and allowed seven runs -- four earned -- on seven hits and a walk while striking out just one batter.
Christian Guzman was 2-for-4 with the lone run scored for the Nationals, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.
Trailing 1-0 early, the Orioles pulled even in the third on a play that knocked Lastings Milledge from the game. Jones singled to lead off and scored on an Alex Cintron triple that was retrieved by Milledge. The center fielder slid on the warning track to cut off Cintron's hit but came up awkwardly after the play. He walked to the dugout under his own power, accompanied by the trainer, while holding his groin.
Milledge was placed on the 15-day disabled list during the game and the Nationals recalled center fielder Roger Bernadina from Double-A Harrisburg to fill Milledge's spot on the roster.
Baltimore continued to score, however, thanks to a couple of fielding gaffes by Lannan to take a 3-1 lead. Nick Markakis reached first with two outs on the pitcher's fielding error, allowing Cintron to score. Melvin Mora followed with a small pop fly behind the mound that deflected off of Lannan's glove and fell for a hit. Aubrey Huff took advantage of the two extra chances with a single to center scoring Markakis.
Scott led off the next inning with his 13th homer. Jones followed with a single and a stolen base before advancing to third on a dropped third strike to end Cintron's at-bat. Olson hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track in right to score Jones and make it 5-1.
Hernandez's two-out blast in the fifth, his sixth this season, extended the O's lead to six. Markakis, who walked to lead off the inning, also scored on the blast.
Markakis hit an RBI single an inning later for the Orioles, scoring Jones, who singled to lead off the inning. Mora followed Markakis with a single to score Olson, who reached on a one-out bunt single.
Milledge hit a one-out single to score Guzman, who led off with a double, to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Lance Cormier shut out Washington in four one-hit innings to earn his first career save.
