Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Evan Longoria and Eric Hinske each hit three-run homers off Jimmy Barthmaier in his major league debut to lead the Tampa Bay Rays in a 10-5 drubbing of the Pittsburgh Pirates to open a three- game set.
Carl Crawford added three hits, including a solo home run, for the Rays, who have rattled off four wins in a row and are victorious in eight of their last 10. They're a franchise-best 17 games over .500 (48-31).
Scott Kazmir (7-3) earned the win despite giving up four runs -- three earned -- on five hits in five frames. He had four strikeouts.
"I think we did well," Jack Wilson said. "We hit Kazmir well. He had a cushion for himself, so I don't think he was out there pitching and hitting his spots."
Freddy Sanchez clubbed a solo home run for the Pirates, who have dropped two in a row and six of nine. Jack Wilson had two hits and three RBI in defeat.
Barthmaier (0-1), who spent five years in the Houston organization before being claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh in the offseason, was roughed up for seven runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.
"We obviously didn't want to give him a chance to settle in," Longoria said. "It's always tough for a first time guy. He's one to throw a little harder, probably a little more amped-up than normal."
It marked the second time in as many games the Pirates gave up 10 runs, as they did so in a 10-0 loss to the Yankees Wednesday.
The Rays jumped on top in the first inning. Crawford singled up the middle with one out. Justin Upton flied out. Hinske then worked a walk before Longoria deposited a 1-1 fastball over the fence in left.
Consecutive singles from Crawford and Upton to start the third set the stage for Hinske's three-run homer to right. Longoria kept it going with a single, but Carlos Pena was caught looking at a third strike for the first out. Dioner Navarro then doubled to right, plating Longoria, and chasing Barthmaier in favor of Denny Bautista after the Rays held a commanding 7-0 lead.
Bautista, who was acquired in a Wednesday trade with Detroit, departed in the fourth inning after being struck on the right elbow by a line drive from Akinori Iwamura.
Sanchez put the Pirates on the board with a lead-off homer in the fourth, and they got closer later in the inning. Jason Bay flied out, but Ryan Doumit doubled before Jason Michaels accounted for the second out with a fly ball to left. Bautista then walked and Chris Gomez singled up the middle to plate Doumit and advanced to second on the throw. Wilson brought the Pirates within 7-4 as he hit a two-run single to left.
Crawford gave the Rays a four-run lead as he took a 1-0 fastball from Sean Burnett over the fence in center in the sixth.
A Wilson double off J.P. Howell scored Michaels from third base in the bottom of the sixth and brought the Pirates within 8-5.
However, the Rays padded their lead in the seventh. Hinske singled and Longoria doubled to left off John Grabow. Pena then lofted a sacrifice fly to left. After Navarro lined out, Jason Bartlett singled to center for the five- run margin.
Pittsburgh managed one hit over the final three innings.
