MLB Game Summary - NY Mets at NY Yankees, Game Two

Final Score: NY Mets 9 - NY Yankees 0

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Sidney Ponson was brilliant on the mound in his return to the Yankees, and they went on to crush the Mets, 9-0, to earn a split of their day-night, two-stadium doubleheader.

In the first game, Carlos Delgado broke out of his slump by setting a club record with nine RBI, including a grand slam, to lead the Mets to a 15-6 drubbing at Yankee Stadium. However, Delgado went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks in the nightcap.

The teams received police escorts to Shea Stadium following the day contest, which lasted nearly four hours, and the Yankees surged ahead in the evening game by dominating the middle innings.

Ponson (5-1), who pitched for Yankees during the 2006 season and re-joined the club earlier this month after he was let go by the Texas Rangers, threw six shutout innings and yielding only five hits while walking four and fanning four.

"[Ponson] pitched well," Derek Jeter said. "He was in a couple jams there early on and pitched out of them. He made the pitches when he needed to and shut them down after that."

Bobby Abreu went 4-for-4 with three RBI and scored for the Yankees, who have won two of their last three contests, both in shutout fashion. Robinson Cano had a solo homer and also finished with three RBI. Jeter had a double, increasing his hit streak to 15 games, and finished with two RBI.

Jose Reyes and David Wright each had two hits for the Mets, who have dropped three of their last five contests. Carlos Beltran had a double, which was the only extra-base hit for the Mets.

Pedro Martinez (2-2) took the loss, as he was rocked for six runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Martinez also gave up a season-high in walks with five, and tied a season-high with the six runs allowed.

"I don't know if I'm trying too hard," Martinez said. "I'm probably thinking too much about it, trying to be too fine. I'm going to have to get back in the video room, change some of the things I've been doing and go on. But the health is here, that's the good news. I feel healthy and i just have to take full responsibility for what's happening right now."

The Yankees had the bases loaded with no outs in the fourth as Abreu and Alex Rodriguez worked walks, and Jason Giambi followed with a single. Cano hit a slow roller to first, allowing the runners to all advance, but rendering the second baseman out at first.

Melky Cabrera earned an intentional walk to reload the bases for Jose Molina, who hit a grounder to Wright at third. Wright stepped on third to record the second out and threw to first for the potential double play, but Molina beat it out, scoring Rodriguez and giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead.

The Yankees padded their lead to 4-0 in the fifth. Johnny Damon led off with a single and Jeter followed with a walk. Abreu singled on a line drive to right field, allowing Damon to come around to score and leaving runners at the corners. Rodriguez went down swinging, but Giambi walked to load the bases. Cano then popped up down the line in left, but it was deep enough for Jeter to tag and score, making it a four-run cushion.

The Yankees added a couple more runs in the sixth. Molina opened the frame by getting beaned, Ponson bunted him over to second and Damon's groundout allowed the catcher to move to third. Jeter then belted a double off the wall in left- center, scoring Molina and chasing Martinez from the game in favor of Scott Schoeneweis. Abreu chipped in an RBI double to left and it was a 6-0 game.

Cano smacked his sixth home run of the year to lead off the seventh. Cabrera popped out, but Molina offered a single to left. Pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit singled and Damon worked a walk to load the bases. Joe Smith was then called on in relief and gave up an RBI groundout to Jeter. Abreu made it 9-0 with an RBI single to right.

Kei Igawa, who was called up by the Yankees between the two games, took the mound in the ninth and got Endy Chavez to pop up for the first out. Fernando Tatis and Reyes had singles, but Luis Castillo grounded into a double play to end Friday's version of the Subway Series.
