Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Curtis Granderson finished 4-for-5 with two triples, a stolen base, an RBI and three runs scored, as the Detroit Tigers bested the Colorado Rockies, 7-1, in the opener of a three-game interleague series at Comerica Park.
Placido Polanco and Miguel Cabrera both went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Tigers, who own a 15-4 mark over their last 19 contests. Ivan Rodriguez, Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen also knocked in a run, while Clete Thomas was 3-for-3 with a walk.
Eddie Bonine (2-0), making only his third career start after having his contract purchased from Triple-A Toledo on June 14, pitched eight solid innings, limiting the Rockies to one run on five hits. Joel Zumaya tossed a scoreless ninth.
"This was not a laugher, by any means, I can tell you that right now," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "This was the National League champions you're talking about. Very aggressive, they let it fly. I thought tonight, fortunately, that might have worked to Bonine's advantage a little bit because he stayed out of the plate. If he was in the middle of the plate, as aggressive as they are, he would have got waffled. But the fact that he moved the ball around to both sides of the plate early on, made good pitches early in the count, he got some quick outs."
Ubaldo Jimenez (2-8) ran up a high pitch count and lasted only four innings for Colorado, yielding four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Ryan Speier allowed one run on four hits in three innings of relief.
"First of all he threw 39 pitches in the first inning," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "He just couldn't get any command of any of his pitches. He gave us no excuses, sometimes you just aren't good. They made him throw strikes and he paid the price."
Jeff Baker drove in the lone run for the Rockies, who have dropped five in a row. Brad Hawpe and Matt Holliday each had a double.
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame. Granderson singled to begin the inning, swiped second and scored on a one-out double by Guillen. Cabrera followed a groundout by Ordonez with a broken-bat single that plated Guillen.
Cabrera and Thomas stroked consecutive singles to start the third, but Gary Sheffield grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Rodriguez then delivered with a two-out, RBI single that found a hole on the left side of the infield.
Detroit added another run in the fourth, as Polanco reached on a one-out single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout by Guillen and came home when Ordonez stroked a base hit to left field.
Colorado had runners on the corners with one gone in the fifth, but Bonine induced an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play from Troy Tulowitzki.
The Tigers tacked on another run in the sixth. Granderson singled to start the frame, streaked to third on a base hit by Polanco and scored when Guillen grounded into a 4-6-3 twin-killing.
With one away in the seventh, Hawpe lined a double to right-center and, two batters later, Baker hit a grounder back up the middle to make it a 5-1 game.
Luis Vizcaino replaced Speier in the eighth and promptly served up consecutive triples to Mike Hollimon and Granderson. Polanco's sacrifice fly drove in the Tigers' seventh run.
