Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Nick Swisher's grand slam capped a seven-run third inning, powering the White Sox to a 10-3 win over the Cubs in the opener of a three-game set between the crosstown rivals.
Carlos Quentin went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in and scored twice for the White Sox, who ended a six-game losing skid to the Cubs. Jermaine Dye went 3- for-5 and drove in three for the White Sox, who have won three of four.
Jose Contreras (7-6) gave up three runs on seven hits in six-plus innings, fanning three and walking two to get the win.
Ryan Dempster (9-3) was ripped for eight runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings. Solo homers by Geovany Soto, Mike Fontenot, and Jim Edmonds provided the offense for the Cubs, who have dropped three of four.
Quentin got the Sox on the board with an RBI single to center in the first, then the home team exploded for seven runs in the third, capped by Swisher's slam.
Orlando Cabrera laced a one-out double to left, and AJ Pierzynski singled him in for a 2-0 ChiSox lead. Quentin lined a double into right, plating Pierzynski, then Dye singled into left, scoring Quentin and pushing the Pale Hose to a 4-0 edge.
Dempster walked Jim Thome and Joe Crede, loading the bases for Swisher, who lined a pitch on the outside corner of the plate to the opposite field. His smash to left-center ended Dempster's day, and put the Cubs in a 8-0 hole.
Soto and Fontenot went back-to-back to start the fifth. Soto lifted a long fly to left, his 13th, and Fontenot followed by going deep to right, his fourth, making it an 8-2 game.
Dye's RBI single in the sixth pushed the White Sox up 9-2, but Edmonds pulled a fly ball into the stands in right to lead off the seventh, his eighth homer, pulling the Cubs within 9-3. The home run came on Edmonds' 38th birthday, but was far from enough to make a game of it for the Cubs.
Dye added an RBI double in the eighth for good measure, pushing the White Sox back ahead by seven. He capped his banner day by making a nice leaping grab in right-center, robbing Kosuke Fukudome of extra bases, for the final out in the ninth.
