Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - After a much-needed day off, David Wright homered in his first two at-bats and the New York Mets avoided a three-game sweep with 8-2 win over the Seattle Mariners at Shea Stadium.

Wright had played every inning of every game this season before sitting out Tuesday's 11-0 loss. The third baseman was struggling at the plate, going 2-for-13 over his last four games entering Wednesday.

"Just trying to simplify things," Wright said of his approach at the plate. "We need wins. We need to get hot and get on a roll here," he added.

Jose Reyes added a three-run homer for the Mets, who won for the second time in their last five games. John Maine (8-5) allowed two runs on five hits over six innings to pick up the win.

Ichiro Suzuki and Willie Bloomquist knocked in the runs for Seattle, which had won consecutive games for the first time since May 27-28 versus Boston. Jeremy Reed was 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Miguel Batista's (3-10) woes continued for Seattle, as the 37-year-old lasted only 2 2/3 innings and gave up eight runs -- four earned -- on five hits, walking five and fanning three. Relegated to the bullpen, Batista made his first start since June 7. Erik Bedard (back spasms) was originally scheduled to toe the rubber for Seattle.

"(It was) clear early on he fell behind a few hitters," Seattle catcher Jeff Clement said of Batista's struggles. "He was fighting it."

Roy Corcoran, Ryan Rowland-Smith, Arthur Rhodes and Brandon Morrow combined to toss 5 1/3 hitless frames in relief. The Mariners bullpen allowed only one base runner -- a two-out walk to Wright in the third -- and retired the final 16 batters, but only after New York built a huge lead.

The Mets got off to a fast start, plating two runs in the opening frame. Reyes drew a lead-off walk, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Luis Castillo. Wright then drove a hanging changeup to the seats in left field.

With two gone in the second, Castillo reached first on a bunt single and scored when Wright hammered an 0-1 fastball over the left-field fence.

The Mets blew the game open with a four-run surge in the third. New York had runners on the corners after Carlos Delgado was hit by a pitch and Fernando Tatis reached on Adrian Beltre's throwing error. Marlon Anderson followed with a sacrifice fly. Tatis then stole second before Brian Schneider worked a walk. After Maine grounded out, Reyes drilled a 1-2 slider to the right-field seats for an 8-0 lead.

Seattle got on the board in the fifth when singles by Reed, Richie Sexson and Bloomquist plated a run. After pinch-hitter Miguel Cairo singled to load the bases, Suzuki made it an 8-2 game with a sac fly to left.
