MLB Game Summary - LA Angels of Anaheim at Washington

Final Score: LA Angels 8 - Washington 3

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Mike Napoli homered, doubled and drove in three runs as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim used a six-run first inning to cruise to an 8-3 triumph over the Washington Nationals in the middle contest of a three-game interleague set.

Howie Kendrick singled twice, scored twice and drove in a run for the Angels, who have won five straight. Torii Hunter went 3-for-4 with a run scored in LA's 10th road win in 11 tries. Jon Garland (7-4) earned the win after allowing three runs on six hits in seven innings of work, with four strikeouts.

"We concentrated a little more," Hunter said. "We were more patient today. I felt good. I felt like I waited on the pitches I could handle."

Shawn Hill (1-5), who didn't make it out of the fourth inning in his previous outing, was torched for eight runs -- six earned -- on eight hits in his three-inning start. Wily Mo Pena and Elijah Dukes each recorded a solo home run as the Nationals dropped their fourth straight, and committed four errors in the process.

LA batted around in a six-run first and never looked back. A walk and single opened the game to put runners on the corners, and Garret Anderson flew out deep enough to left to bring in the game's first run.

Vladimir Guerrero swung on a high fastball for a base hit, knocking in another tally. The perennial All-Star left the game an inning later with flu-like symptoms, but the damage had been done.

After a Hunter single, Casey Kotchman laced a shot to first that Dmitri Young couldn't handle. The error brought home Guerrero and opened the flood gates, as Kendrick and Napoli followed with run-scoring hits before Garland produced the sixth and final run of the frame with a groundout back to the mound.

Napoli, who entered the game in the midst of a 2-for-39 slump, made it 8-0 in the third with a towering, two-run blast to right-center on a full-count fastball.

"Hill was suffering with location," Nats manager Manny Acta said. "When you're in pain, it's hard to hit your spots. We have the number-eight hitter up with a full count, and all we want to do is throw one out of the strike zone. But it tails back over the plate, and the kid hits it out."

Pena and Dukes recorded leadoff homers in the third and fourth inning, respectively, and pinch-hitter Kory Casto singled home another run in the fifth to cut Washington's deficit to five.

Garland stymied any hope of a comeback, though, retiring the last seven batters he faced, while Jose Arredondo recorded four strikeouts in perfect eighth and ninth innings of relief.
