Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Frank Catalanotto and Jarrod Saltalamacchia had run-scoring singles in the eighth, as the Texas Rangers edged the Washington Nationals, 5-3, in the finale of a three-game interleague series at Nationals Park.
Both starters were dealing out of the gate. Texas' Vicente Padilla (10-3) allowed three baserunners through five before two homers plated three runs in the sixth and seventh. Washington's John Lannan allowed only four to reach on four hits through six but was also victimized by the longball, allowing two solo home runs in the no-decision. Lannan fanned six and Padilla five.
"I thought he (Padilla) handled himself well," Texas skipper Ron Washington said. "He got to the seventh with a reasonable amount of pitches, but left one up to Belliard. If he would have gotten through that inning you probably would have seen him in the eighth."
Brandon Boggs homered and walked with two runs scored and Ian Kinsler added a solo shot for Texas, which has won three of its last four.
Ronnie Belliard hit a two-run homer and Willie Harris a solo shot for Washington, which has now dropped five of six overall.
Nationals pitching gave two back in the eighth. Luis Ayala (1-4) walked Boggs to start the frame and Joel Hanrahan appeared to take control, coming on to fan the next two, but Boggs stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Marlon Byrd worked a two-out walk and pinch-hitter Catalanotto poked an RBI single to left. Saltalamacchia followed with an RBI single back up the middle to put Texas up two.
"I just wanted to go up there and be aggressive and I was able to slap it through the left side and allow us to take the lead," Catalanotto said.
C.J. Wilson worked around a one-out single from Dimitri Young to record his 15th save of the season.
Boggs opened the fourth frame taking a 3-2 Lannan fastball and crushing it deep into the left field seats, breaking a scoreless tie.
Kinsler greeted Lannan with the longball leading off the sixth, stroking a first-pitch changeup to left for his 12th home run of the season.
The Nats finally got to Padilla in the home half. Harris came on to pinch-hit for Lannan and belted a home run over the center-field wall, cutting the lead to one.
Ayala entered for Lannan in the seventh, allowing a leadoff single to Byrd, who moved to second on a one-out walk to Saltalamacchia. Pinch-hitter Ramon Vazquez followed with an RBI single to right and Padilla moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Kinsler, however, grounded out to limit the damage.
Washington tied it up in the home half. Jesus Flores looped a single to center and Belliard stroked a two-run shot to left-center.
