MLB Game Summary - San Francisco at Kansas City

Final Score: San Francisco 3 - Kansas City 5

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Mike Aviles went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in, as the Kansas City Royals topped San Francisco, 5-3, in the middle installment of a three-game interleague series with the Giants.

Jose Guillen finished with a pair of hits, including a two-run home run, while Alex Gordon walked three times for Kansas City, which lost Friday's series opener, 9-4.

Gil Meche (5-8) took the win after allowing two runs -- one earned -- on three hits in 5 2/3 innings. Meche also struck out seven for the Royals, who have won seven of nine.

"After the fourth (inning), I looked up and saw 70 pitches," Meche said. "Strikeouts are good, but that's the downfall of it. In the times I wasn't striking the guys out, I was still 2-2, 3-2, deep into counts."

Kevin Correia (1-5) took the loss after his five innings of work, in which he surrendered three runs on six hits and four walks.

"I felt all right," Correia, who made his second start since coming off the disabled list, said. "Physically I felt great and my stuff was not very good as far as off-speed pitches were today. But physically I felt good."

Bengie Molina hit a pair of sacrifice flies for San Francisco, which managed just four singles en route to losing its seventh of 10 games.

The Royals had the bases loaded with none out in the home first, but only got one run out of the situation. With one out, Mark Grudzielanek grounded into a fielder's choice that plated David DeJesus.

Mark Teahen grounded out to end the frame, but Kansas City increased its lead in the fourth. With two outs, Ross Gload doubled and Joey Gathright followed with a walk. DeJesus legged out a single on a grounder to third that loaded the bases for Aviles. The rookie reached out and slapped a single up the middle to drive in two runs and boost the Royals' edge to 3-0.

The Giants came back in the sixth, when Fred Lewis and Ray Durham started the frame with singles. Randy Winn tapped a grounder back to Meche, who fielded the ball cleanly but threw the ball into center field while trying to get the out at second base.

Lewis scored on the play and Durham ran to third. Molina's sacrifice brought in a second run, and after Aaron Rowand hit a fly out, Meche's day was over. Ron Mahay came in and surrendered a John Bowker single as Winn advanced to third. But Rich Aurilia popped out to right to end the inning with San Francisco trailing, 3-2.

However, Kansas City restored its three-run edge in the seventh. Gordon walked with one out, and Billy Sadler was brought in to pitch to Guillen. The Giants reliever came in throwing fastballs, and left the fourth one to Guillen up. The Royals slugger smoked the belt-high pitch over the wall in left center for a 5-2 Kansas City lead.

Molina hit another sacrifice fly in the eighth that plated Durham, but Ramon Ramirez got out of the inning without further damage. Joakim Soria worked a 1-2-3 ninth to nail down his 19th save of the season.
