Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Erick Aybar's two-out, two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning drove in the go-ahead run, as the Los Angeles Angels downed the slumping Philadelphia Phillies, 6-2, in the middle installment of a three-game interleague set.
Aybar came off the bench in the third inning to replace shortstop Maicer Izturis, who left because of tightness in his right hamstring.
Vladimir Guerrero clubbed a pair of home runs for the Angels, who have won three of their last four contests. Chone Figgins finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Joe Saunders (11-3) went seven strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits en route to becoming the American League's first 11-game winner. Francisco Rodriguez hurled a scoreless ninth to notch his major league-leading 29th save of the season.
"I located early on pretty good," Saunders said. "(I) really kept them off balance."
Jayson Werth belted a solo home run for the Phillies, who have dropped a season-high four in a row. Pedro Feliz added an RBI double.
Brett Myers (3-9) was saddled with the loss after yielding four runs on six hits over 7 2/3 innings. The right-hander is winless in his last four starts, going 0-3 with a no-decision.
Second baseman Chase Utley, who has gone hitless in his last 23 at-bats, the longest stretch of his career, was not in the lineup for Philadelphia (rest). Eric Bruntlett started in his place and went 1-for-3.
A two-out blast by Aybar gave the Angels a 4-2 lead in the top of the eighth. Figgins' single kept the inning alive and Aybar drove a changeup just inside the right-field foul pole. Garret Anderson then doubled and Guerrero was intentionally walked. J.C. Romero was called on from the bullpen and retired Casey Kotchman.
Scot Shields started the home eighth and fanned pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs and Jimmy Rollins. Shane Victorino then struck out swinging, but reached first on a wild pitch. After he swiped second, Pat Burrell worked a walk to bring up the go-ahead run at the plate in the form of Ryan Howard, but the first baseman went down swinging to thwart the rally.
Chad Durbin took over on the mound for Philadelphia and, with one out in the ninth, hit Gary Matthews Jr. Jeff Mathis then hit a fly ball to the wall in left that So Taguchi, who pinch ran for Burrell in the eighth, misplayed for a two-base error. Pinch-hitter Juan Rivera grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Matthews, and Figgins stroked an RBI single to left for a 6-2 lead.
In the bottom half, Jose Arredondo walked the first two batters he faced before Rodriguez was summoned from the bullpen. Feliz then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play and pinch-hitter Geoff Jenkins fouled out to third to end the game.
With one away in the fourth, the Angels got on the board when Guerrero crushed an 0-1 slider over the left field wall. Myers then retired eight batters in a row until Guerrero led off the seventh with a shot to left-center field. It was his 31st career home run versus the Phillies, the most against any opponent.
Philadelphia rallied with a pair of runs in the next frame. A two-out blast to center field by Werth cut the deficit in half. Chris Coste then drew a walk and scored on Feliz's RBI double. Bruntlett followed with a single to center, but Feliz was held at third and Bruntlett was eventually throw out at second to end the inning.
