MLB Game Summary - Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs

Final Score: Chicago WSox 7 - Chicago Cubs 11

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Jim Edmonds hit two home runs as part of a nine-run fourth inning as the Chicago Cubs defeated cross-town rival the Chicago White Sox, 11-7, in the second of a three-game interleague series at Wrigley Field.

Aramis Ramirez finished 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and four RBI and Mike Fontenot hit a solo shot for the Cubs, who have won two straight and four of their last seven games. Eric Patterson chipped in with three hits, including a double, RBI and two runs scored in the win. The Cubs have now won 13 straight at Wrigley.

Jason Marquis (6-3) earned the win after grinding through seven innings and allowing five runs on eight hits, while striking out four and issuing a walk. He improved to 1-2 in four career starts versus the White Sox. Kerry Wood earned his 19th save of the season.

"Everything went well today. Marquis pitched good enough for us. The offense was explosive," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said.

Jermaine Dye hit a two-run homer and knocked in three, and Dewayne Wise added a two-run shot for the White Sox, who have dropped the first two games in the series and four of their last seven overall.

Jose Contreras (6-6), who suffered the loss, struggled mightily through only 3 1/3 innings of work, surrendering nine runs on 10 hits. He struck out one, walked two and served up three home runs. The veteran right-hander is 1-3 in five lifetime appearances against the Cubs.

The White Sox jumped on Marquis for a pair of runs in the top of the first. After the Cubs' right-hander retired the first two batters, Carlos Quentin singled and Dye followed by hammering an 0-1 fastball over the leftfield wall, giving the visitors the early lead.

Ramirez's base hit to right in the bottom of the frame plated Patterson, who doubled to get the Cubs on the board.

A two-run homer by Wise in the top of the fourth scored Nick Swisher to extend the White Sox's advantage to 4-1. It was Wise's 10th career homer and first since 2004.

The Cubs exploded for nine runs, sending 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Edmonds and Fontenot got the frame started by hitting back-to- back solo homers into the leftfield bleachers to get the Cubs to within a run. However, the home team wasn't finished. After Geovany Soto grounded out, Ryan Theriot drew a walk and Marquis singled, putting runners on first and second. Kosuke Fukudome then singled to right, bringing home Theriot to tie the game and leaving runners on the corners.

Patterson kept the Cubs rally going by singling home another run to give the home team a 5-4 lead and a run-scoring base hit by Derek Lee and three-run homer into the basket in left by Ramirez, gave the Cubs a 9-4 lead.

"I felt real strong. In that inning, I left a couple of forkballs up in the zone, and a couple of fastballs up in the zone, and I paid for it," Contreras said. "I felt great all the way to the fourth inning."

The Cubs continued to pile it on in the frame. After chasing Contreras, the White Sox turned to Boone Logan and Edmonds greeted the lefty by launching the first pitch over the ivy in left for his second round-tripper of the inning.

"That's something to remember," Edmonds said. "That's quite a feat. It's not easy to do. It was fun to be a part of that big inning today. This was a great win for us. We play well in this ballpark."

A.J. Pierzynski's RBI single up the middle in the fifth made it a five-run game, but the White Sox could have scored more. With runners on first and second and one down, Dye hit a comebacker to Marquis, who started a 1-4-3 double-play to prevent further damage.

Mark DeRosa's two-out RBI single in the sixth put the Cubs ahead by an 11-5 margin.

Carlos Marmol's wild pitch in the top of the eighth got the White Sox a run closer.

Bobby Howry started the ninth with the Cubs holding an 11-6 lead and gave up a one-out single to Orlando Cabrera and after striking out Pierzynski, served up a single to Quentin and run-scoring base hit to Dye. Howry was then lifted in favor of Wood and the hard-throwing right-hander fanned Swisher to end the game.
