MLB Game Summary - Toronto at Pittsburgh

Final Score: Toronto 0 - Pittsburgh 1

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Doug Mientkiewicz scored the winning run on a John McDonald fielding error in the bottom of the 12th inning, as the Pittsburgh Pirates topped Toronto, 1-0, and spoiled Cito Gaston's return as the Blue Jays manager.

John Gibbons was fired Friday as Toronto's manager and replaced by Gaston, who managed the team from 1989-1997 and won back-to-back world championships in 1992 and 1993.

Pittsburgh starter Zach Duke held the opposition scoreless for seven innings. He allowed six hits and struck out four, but didn't factor into the decision. Tyler Yates (3-0) pitched two hitless innings for Pittsburgh while striking out one batter for the win.

"Stopping momentum is key right there.Anytime you lose a few in a row,you have to stop it as soon as possible," Duke said. "Maybe the change of scenery was what it was. Hopefully we can start it back on the positive side now."

Mientkiewicz was 3-for-4 while Jack Wilson and Freddy Sanchez each had two hits for the Pirates, who snapped a three game losing streak.

Roy Halladay also threw seven shut-out innings for Toronto. The right-hander allowed six hits and fanned seven, but came away with a no-decision. He left the game in the seventh inning, though, after getting hit by a line drive above his right temple. The team says he is day-to-day and does not expect him to miss his next start.

"Doc (Halladay) pitched such a great game tonight,(Pittsburgh) made some great plays. We could of had a couple runs there and won the ballgame," Gaston said. "It didn't work out that way. It seems to be the way we've been playing, not getting many runs. We got to get some hitting if we don't get any hitting, we will have more nights like this."

Jesse Carlson (1-1) suffered the loss for Toronto allowing one run on two hits in the 12th, although Jason Frasor was on the mound for the winning run.

McDonald and Alex Rios each went 2-for-5 for Toronto, which has lost six straight, tying a season-high.

Mientkiewicz doubled to lead-off the 12th on a shot to the gap in right- center. He moved to third on a swinging bunt down the third base line from Wilson. Raul Chavez then walked to load the bases before pinch-hitter Jason Michaels hit a chopper to McDonald that the shortstop could not handle, allowing Mientkiewicz to score.

Rios laced a two-out double to left in the first for Toronto but was stranded after a Vernon Wells strikeout.

The Blue Jays got a man in scoring position again in the second. Rod Barajas was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to second on a McDonald two-out single. Halladay, however, struck out looking to end the inning.

Rios doubled again in the top of the third, another two-out hit, and moved to third base on a Wells infield single, but Scott Rolen fouled out to strand the runners.

Pittsburgh got a man to second for the first time in the home third. Chavez hit a lead-off single and moved to second on a Duke sacrifice bunt. Nyjer Morgan and Sanchez both struck out to end the inning, though.

In the fifth, Mientkiewicz walked and Wilson singled to open the inning but Halladay got a double play on a fly out as Mientkiewicz was thrown out at the plate tagging from third and Duke struck out looking to end the inning.

Pittsburgh loaded the bases with one out in the seventh but was unable to break the scoreless tie. Adam LaRoche and Mientkiewicz singled to start the inning and moved to second and third, respectively, on a Wilson sacrifice bunt before Halladay intentionally walked Chavez. Chris Gomez pinch-hit for the Pirates but struck out swinging before Morgan hit a line drive off the right side of Halladay's head that was deflected and caught by Rolen at third to end the inning.

Matt Stairs hit a pinch-hit single to lead-off the 10th for Toronto. He moved to second on a Marco Scutaro sacrifice bunt, but Brad Wilkerson and Rios struck out to end the inning.
