Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Jose Lopez finished the game with four runs batted in to help Jim Riggleman win his managerial debut with Seattle as the Mariners romped over the Atlanta Braves, 10-2, in the opener of a three-game interleague set at Turner Field.
Riggleman replaced the fired John McLaren on Thursday, with McLaren's tenure as Seattle manager ending after less than a year. Seattle currently holds the worst record in the majors at 26-47 and is 17 1/2 games back of the first- place Angels in the American League West. McLaren had taken over behind the bench on July 2, 2007 after Mike Hargrove stepped down.
Earlier in the week, Seattle also replaced its general manager as Bill Bavasi was let go and Lee Pelekoudas was named the interim general manager.
Lopez finished the game 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored while Adrian Beltre went 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Mariners, who had dropped five of six coming into the game.
Erik Bedard started on the mound for Seattle, but left after just three innings with back spasms in his right side. He gave up just two hits with a strikeout and also had a base hit in his first at-bat of the season. Ryan Rowland-Smith (1-1) got the win for pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
"From yesterday morning when everybody found out and up until now, it's been up its been a strange ride," said Rowland-Smith. "But I guess guys just came out and got a brand new start, and guys just sort of looked at it that way. Even Jim [Riggleman] says this is a new start for us. Everyone is staying really positive. It's a good feeling. It just seemed like everyone had each other's backs."
Omar Infante went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Kelly Johnson drove in the other run for the Braves, who have dropped four of their last six games. Jorge Campillo (2-2) got the loss as he was tagged for four runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.
"It looked like Campillo was having another good game and we got their ace had to come out early," said Johnson. "It looked like it was in our favor, but that's the kind of potential they have over there. They just haven't been playing up to it offensively."
Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones left the game in the top of the eighth inning after re-aggravating the strain in his right quad. He finished the contest 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored and it was later announced the he is expected to miss at least the next two games.
Trailing, 1-0, to start the sixth, the Mariners tied the game in the inning as Lopez led off the frame with a double and later came home on Beltre's double to right.
Seattle then took the lead in the seventh. Willie Bloomquist worked a one-out walk and then came home as Jeremy Reed punched a pinch-hit double to left- center. After Ichiro Suzuki was issued a free pass, Jeff Bennett took the mound, but gave up a single to Lopez that allowed Reed to come home. Raul Ibanez then loaded the bases with a single and Beltre followed with a sacrifice fly to score Suzuki for a 4-1 lead.
The Mariners continued to pour it on in the eighth and solidified their lead with five runs in the frame. Will Ohman started on the mound and got the first two outs, but then loaded the bases for Lopez, who cleared the bases with a double to left. Ibanez then roped a double to right to score Lopez and, after Buddy Carlyle took the mound, Beltre punched a single to center to bring home Ibanez for a 9-1 lead.
Johnson roped a double to right to score Yunel Escobar, who got on base with an infield single, in the eighth to cut Seattle's lead to 9-2.
Bloomquist scored Yuniesky Betancourt in the ninth on an error from Infante to account for the final score.
The Mariners came close to getting the lead in the second as Beltre led off with a blast to left field, but Infante went back to the wall, leaped up and grabbed the ball before it was able to go over the fence.
The Braves grabbed the lead in the fourth inning. Roy Corcoran took the mound in place of Bedard and got the first out of the inning, but then walked Chipper Jones and Mark Teixeira. Infante then lined a single to center to score Jones for a 1-0 lead. Atlanta had an opportunity to plate more runs as Brian McCann followed with a single to load the bases, but Jeff Francoeur grounded into an inning-ending double play.
