Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Edinson Volquez hurled seven solid innings, and Jolbert Cabrera had a two-run double as Cincinnati downed the New York Yankees, 4-2, in the opener of a three-game set at Yankee Stadium.
Volquez (10-2) surrendered just two runs on seven hits, while walking one and fanning five to pick up his 10th win of the season. The hard-throwing, right- hander leads the major leagues with a miniscule 1.71 earned run average.
"He's got a lot of potential, he's one of the best we've seen," Johnny Damon said. "He's overpowering, he's able to throw 97-98 miles per hour. I'm glad he's pitching in the other league."
Cabrera was 4-for-4 before leaving with an injury for the Reds, who snapped a five-game skid. Cabrera suffered a dislocated left index finger on a headfirst slide while advancing to second on a wild pitch during the seventh inning. Joey Votto finished 3-for-4 with a home run.
Damon and Robinson Cano each had an RBI single for the Yankees, who lost for the first time in eight games.
Mike Mussina (10-5) allowed four runs on 10 hits in eight innings en route to his first loss since May 20.
Cincinnati was appearing at the Stadium for the first time since the "Big Red Machine," featuring legends like Pete Rose, Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan, swept the Yankees in the 1976 World Series.
The Reds jumped on top when Votto belted a two-out, solo shot, his 12th of the year, off Mussina in the second.
The Yankees deadlocked things in the third. Melky Cabrera led off with a single, advanced to second on Jose Molina's slow grounder to third and moved up another 90-feet when Volquez balked. Damon followed by slapping a broken bat RBI single past a drawn-in infield.
Mussina fell apart in the fifth and Cincinnati took control with a three-spot. Edwin Encarnacion led off the frame with a double that Damon lost in the lights. Corey Patterson moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt and, after Paul Bako grounded out, Mussina intentionally walked Jay Bruce to face Jolbert Cabrera. The moved backfired badly when the shortstop roped a two-run double down the left field line. Ken Griffey finally capped the inning with a run- scoring single to right, and the Reds led 4-1.
The Yankees finally got a run back in the seventh. Alex Rodriguez laced a one- out single up the middle, moved to second on a Hideki Matsui single and advanced to third on Jason Giambi's deep fly ball to left before Cano came through with a two-out, run-scoring single.
New York couldn't muster any more offense from there as Jared Burton and Francisco Cordero finished things with an inning of scoreless relief apiece.
The Yankees managed to get the tying run up to the plate in the ninth when Matsui came through with a two-out single. But, Giambi grounded harmlessly to second to end things as Cordero picked up his 14th save of the season.
"We were freezing cold," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "We were due to win one and they were due to lose one."
