Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Aramis Ramirez belted a game-winning leadoff home run off Scott Linebrink in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Chicago Cubs rallied to edge the Chicago White Sox, 4-3, in the opener of a three-game interleague set at Wrigley Field.
Ramirez, who also tied in the game with a home run in the seventh, blasted a low Linebrink (2-2) fastball over the wall in dead center to win it.
"I hit it pretty good, but I hit it on the line dead center," Ramirez said. "I wasn't sure. Anytime you try to hit a home run, you won't hit it. I just tried to hit the ball hard."
Derrek Lee also homered for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game skid and won for the 12th straight time at home.
"We've got confidence. That's obvious," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "We've been able to come from behind quite a bit this year. Today was no exception. Our big boys got the job done today, which is good to see."
Ted Lilly allowed three runs on seven hits while walking three and fanning eight in 6 2/3 innings. Kerry Wood (4-1) earned the win with a scoreless ninth.
"I made a couple of mistakes," Lilly said. "I feel fortunate that the offense bailed me out. This was a big game for us, considering we had lost three in a row."
AJ Pierzynski had a two-run home run for the White Sox, who have lost seven straight on the road. Jermaine Dye also homered for the ChiSox.
"It's a tough loss to swallow, especially when you have it set up the way you wanted it," Pierzynski said.
John Danks pitched brilliantly, surrendering just one run on five hits in six innings but was let down by his bullpen. Octavio Dotel served up a pair of home runs in the seventh, before Linebrink lost things.
"I took Danks out because we have a plan," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "He threw six good innings. Then we come in with Dotel, Linebrink and (Bobby) Jenks. That didn't work out today."
The latest edition of this intra-city rivalry had extra significance with both Chicago teams currently residing in first place of their respective divisions. It was the first time since interleague play began that the White Sox and Cubs went head-to-head as division frontrunners.
The Cubs jumped on top with a run in the first. Kosuke Fukudome and Ryan Theriot led off with consecutive singles to put runners on the corners. Lee then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to chase Fukudome home.
Dye quickly evened things when he led off the second with his 15th home run of the year.
The ChiSox took their first lead with a pair of runs in the third. Orlando Cabrera slapped a single up the middle and Pierzynski followed by ripping a two-run homer over the wall in center.
The Cubs were having no luck off Danks but quickly took advantage when Dotel came in the game in the seventh. Lee greeted the reliever by lacing an opposite field homer, his 15th on the year, and Ramirez followed by crushing a hanging slider over the wall in left to even things at three.
