Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Dave Bush baffled Toronto hitters, taking a no-hitter into the eighth, as the Milwaukee Brewers withstood a six-run ninth to complete a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays, 8-7.
Bush (3-7) dominated Blue Jay bats for eight innings, allowing one run on only two hits and a walk with two strikeouts for the win.
"Most guys that pitch to contact, have a better chance to pitch one," Bush said of the no-hit bid, describing himself as a contact pitcher. "I wasn't actually thinking about it on every pitch. I was just trying to concentrate."
Russell Branyan hit a three-run homer, Prince Fielder had two hits including a home run while Corey Hart was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in for Milwaukee, which is riding a four-game winning streak.
A.J. Burnett (6-7) continued his recent struggles, surrendering eight runs on eight hits and four walks through five frames.
Lyle Overbay tripled and homered while Joe Inglett added a grand slam in the ninth for Toronto, which is in the midst of a five-game slide.
Overbay ended Bush's quest leading off the eighth. Ryan Braun dove helplessly to catch the ball, which was clearly out of his reach, allowing Overbay to reach third. Alex Rios immediately followed with a single to left, thus ruining the shutout as well.
"Somebody had to do it," Overbay said of breaking up the bid. "It's (getting no-hit) the last thing you ever want to do."
Toronto mounted an improbable comeback in the ninth.
Tim Dillard replaced Bush and was greeted with a Matt Stairs single to right before Overbay smacked a two-out, two-run homer landing just over the center- field wall. After a single by Rios and a walk to Gregg Zaun, Dillard exited in favor of David Riske who issued another walk to load the bases. Inglett stepped in and drilled a 3-2 fastball out for a grand slam, bringing the Jays to within one.
Salomon Torres came on for what was amazingly now a save situation, giving up an infield single to Rod Barajas before retiring Stairs on strikes for his 10th save, allowing Bush to come away with a victory.
"We never quit and we never give up," Jays manager John Gibbons said. "We're not winning games right now. We're not playing well enough to win."
Milwaukee wasted little time in getting to Burnett. Braun and Fielder hit consecutive two-out singles before Hart smoked a double to center, scoring both.
The Brewers added a run in the second. Jason Kendall singled to left with one out, moved up on a Bush sacrifice bunt and scored on a J.J. Hardy double down the left-field line.
Burnett issued consecutive walks to start the third before Branyan broke the game open with a a three-run homer to right, making it 6-0 after three.
Fielder started the fifth with an inside-the-park home run after the ball got hung up underneath the right-field wall padding. Right-fielder Rios threw his hands up to say the ball was wedged but decided to pick the ball up after not seeing an immediate ruling from an umpire. Kendall added a two-out RBI double later in the frame to make it 8-0.
Zaun became Toronto's first baserunner, leading off the sixth with a walk, but Bush came back to retire the next three.
In the seventh, Bush got Stairs and Scott Rolen to fly out and Vernon Wells on a foul out to third, which put him six tantalizing outs from the no-hitter.
"He did a good job, seven strong innings," Brewers manager Ned Yost said of Bush. "Then the no-hitter got going and you start thinking maybe this is something. We scored some runs for him early too."
