Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Eric Stults gave the beleaguered Dodger pitching staff six-plus strong innings, as Los Angeles completed a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, 7-4, at Great American Ball Park.
Stults (1-0), called up after Brad Penny landed on the DL with shoulder soreness, pitched well in his 2008 debut. The lefty allowed three runs -- one earned -- on six hits and a walk while fanning five in the win.
Matt Kemp homered and doubled, driving in three runs and James Loney added three hits with an RBI, scoring twice for Los Angeles, which won its third consecutive contest after dropping five straight.
Aaron Harang (3-10) labored over 107 pitches in just five innings of work for Cincinnati. The right-hander was touched for five runs on 10 hits and three walks in the loss.
Brandon Phillips had two hits and two RBI and Norris Hopper added two hits and one RBI for Cincinnati, which has now dropped five straight.
The Dodgers took an early lead with a run in the first on back-to-back two-out doubles from Jeff Kent and Russell Martin.
Los Angeles extended its lead with two runs in the fourth. Kemp stroked a leadoff home run to right-center and Angel Berroa started the small-ball effort with an infield single. Stults then singled to left with Berroa moving, and ended up on third. Juan Pierre followed with a drag bunt RBI single up the first base line.
LA started the fifth with a walk and a single before Kemp lined a two-run double to the gap in right-center. Loney added a two-out RBI single off Mike Lincoln in the sixth to make it 6-0.
Stults avoided trouble in the sixth, getting Adam Dunn to hit into an inning- ending double play after Hopper and Jay Bruce opened the frame with consecutive singles.
However, a walk to Edwin Encarnacion to start the seventh was followed by an error from Kent, putting runners on the corners with nobody out. Paul Bako managed a run scoring infield single when the batted ball deflected off Loney's glove and then off the Reds baserunner.
Scott Proctor replaced Stults, retiring Paul Janish on strikes before walking pinch-hitter Javier Valentin. Hopper laid down a bunt single, plating another before Joe Beimel came on to retire Bruce on strikes. Jonathan Broxton then entered, giving up a two-run single to Phillips. Broxton intentionally walked Dunn to load the bases before Encarnacion grounded out to end the rally.
Los Angeles came back to add a run in the ninth. Loney doubled and scored on an Andre Ethier single to center.
Takashi Saito worked around a leadoff single from Corey Patterson to record his 10th save.
