Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Justin Morneau went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, as the Minnesota Twins crushed the Washington Nationals, 11-2, in the second of a three-game set from the Metrodome.
Delmon Young and Brian Buscher each chipped in a pair of RBI for the Twins, who have won four of five overall.
Kevin Slowey (4-6) got the win as he yielded only one run on seven hits through six-plus frames.
Cristian Guzman and Elijah Dukes had three hits apiece for the Nats, who have dropped two in a row. Felipe Lopez had a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Jason Bergmann (1-5) took the loss as he was touched for three runs -- one earned -- on five hits in six innings.
The Twins got on the board in the first inning. Carlos Gomez led off with a bunt single and moved to second as Aaron Boone botched the throw to first. Alexi Casilla moved him over to third with a sacrifice bunt, Joe Mauer worked a walk and Morneau offered a sac fly to center to make it 1-0.
Minnesota tacked on a couple more runs in the second inning. Jason Kubel led off with a single, and two batters later Buscher put runners on the corners with a single. Brendan Harris followed with a double that Lastings Milledge misplayed in center, permitting both runners to score.
"It's part of the game," Washington manager Manny Acta said of his team's sloppy play. "We haven't been playing good defense lately. We have to pick it up."
A Lopez homer to begin the fifth cut Minnesota's lead to 3-1.
Saul Rivera took over on the hill for the Nats in the seventh and gave up a lead-off single to Gomez, who was out at second when Casilla grounded into a force out. Mauer made it first and third with a single, Morneau followed with an RBI single and Michael Cuddyer earned a free pass to load the bases. Kubel then cracked a sacrifice fly to left and the Twins were sitting on a 5-1 cushion.
Harris opened the home eighth with a triple and crossed home as Gomez followed with a single. Casilla and Mauer were retired, but Morneau hit an RBI single to right. Cuddyer and Kubel drew walks to load the bases and Brian Sanches was called on in relief.
Young kept it going with a two-run double and Buscher followed with a two-run single, capping the six-run inning and giving the Twins an 11-1 advantage.
Boof Bonser was on the hill for Minnesota in the ninth and gave up consecutive singles to Guzman and Dukes. Milledge then hit a ball to the left side of the infield, which Harris misplayed, allowing Guzman to score and rendering both runners safe. Young went down swinging for the first out and Jesus Flores grounded into a double play to end the game.
