MLB Game Summary - Atlanta at Texas

Final Score: Atlanta 5 - Texas 2

Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Omar Infante and Gregor Blanco each had a run-scoring hit for Atlanta in a three-run ninth inning, which propelled the Braves to a 5-2 win over Texas in the middle contest of a three-game interleague set.

Chipper Jones finished 2-for-5 with a home run and kept his average pinned at .400, while Kelly Johnson drove in two runs for Atlanta, which has won four of six.

Jo-Jo Reyes held Texas, the top-scoring team in the majors, to two runs -- one earned -- on five hits in seven innings of work; though he did walk four and strike out only three in the no-decision. Jeff Bennett (1-4) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless eighth inning for the Braves.

C.J. Wilson (0-2) took the loss for the Rangers after allowing all three runs, though only one was earned, on two hits in the ninth. Eric Hurley threw five- plus solid innings in his second start of the season and gave up just two runs on five hits for Texas, which has lost four of six.

The Rangers did not have the American League's batting average leader in the lineup. Milton Bradley -- who owns a .330 mark -- did not play because of a strained left quadriceps suffered in Tuesday's game. Gerald Laird and Brandon Boggs each had an RBI for Texas.

An awkward play by Wilson helped Atlanta start a ninth-inning rally and break the game open. Jeff Francoeur topped a weak grounder down the first base line that Wilson got to quickly. The pitcher threw the ball to the right of Francoeur, however, and well wide of first base, allowing the runner to go to second base.

After Brandon Jones struck out, Infante put his bat on the ball and smacked an opposite field single to right. Josh Hamilton made a strong throw in, but it was off-line as Francoeur crossed home and Infante went to second.

Blanco then slapped a hit to the gap in right-center that rolled past Hamilton to the warning track. Infante scored easily for a 4-2 Braves lead, while Blanco ended up on third.

Later, Johnson hit into a fielder's choice that brought in Blanco for a three-run Braves lead before Wilson got out of the inning.

"It's a game of inches. If C.J. would have let (catcher Gerald Laird) field the ball, the outcome of the game would have been different," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "C.J. is only human."

Mike Gonzalez then came on for the Braves to close out the game. Gonzalez had not pitched in a major league game since May 15, 2007, having undergone Tommy John surgery on May 31.

After recovering, he spent the early portions of this season working his way back to MLB competition and was activated off the disabled list earlier Wednesday. The left-hander was perfect in his return, as he set the Rangers down in order for the save.

"It felt good to be back," Gonzalez said. "It means a lot to me to be put in in the ninth after 12 months, and they still have the confidence in me."

In the first, Chipper Jones smoked a Hurley fastball beyond the center field fence for a 1-0 Braves lead. Atlanta added another run in the third, when a Johnson single plated Yunel Escobar, who had doubled with two outs.

But Texas got one run back in the home third, somewhat unconventionally. Reyes hit German Duran with a pitch, and Duran stole second with two outs while Laird batted. A wild pitch during the same at-bat allowed Duran to go to third, and Laird's single brought Duran home.

However, the contest became one of wasted opportunities. In the home fourth the Rangers had the bases loaded and two out, but Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a fly out to right field to end the inning.

Then, in the top of the sixth, the Braves had runners on first and second with none out. But Frank Francisco came on in relief and struck out Mark Teixeira for the first out. The Rangers reliever walked Brian McCann to load the bases, but then fanned Francoeur and got Brandon Jones to pop up to end the inning.

In the bottom half, however, Texas evened the game without much of a rally. With Hamilton on first with one out, Marlon Byrd grounded into a fielder's choice. But the center fielder Byrd swiped second and went to third on McCann's throwing error.

Boggs then grounded a ball to the hole on the left side of the infield, forcing third baseman Infante to range to his far left. Infante bobbled the ball as he removed it from his glove, allowing Byrd to score and tie the game at 2-2.
