MLB Game Summary - Florida at Seattle

Final Score: Florida 6 - Seattle 1

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Andrew Miller tossed seven strong innings, as the Florida Marlins beat up on the lowly Seattle Mariners, 6-1, in the opener of a three-game interleague set at Safeco Field.

Miller (5-5) allowed one run on six hits for Florida.

"I think I did a good job pitching the zone other than that (fourth) inning when I walked the first two hitters," Miller said. "I didn't feel like I had the greatest stuff, other than I felt I had decent fastball command. I pitched with what I had and the guys made some great plays behind be tonight. I'll take that every time out."

Dan Uggla finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in for the Marlins, who have won two straight following a three-game slide.

Luis Gonzalez drove in two runs, while Jeremy Hermida had two hits, scored twice and knocked in a run. Cody Ross and Mike Jacobs also had an RBI.

Carlos Silva (3-8) went just 4 2/3 innings before he was ejected for arguing a safe call at first base. Silva allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk, and hasn't collected a victory since besting Oakland on April 17. He has gone 0-8 with three no-decisions over that span.

Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki started in right field for the first time since August 19, 2006 and went 1-for-5. Richie Sexson was 2-for-4, while Kenji Johjima knocked in the lone run for Seattle, which extended its home losing streak to eight games.

The last time the Mariners dropped eight in a row as the host was between July 28-August 12, 1996, when Seattle played its games at the Kingdome.

Before the game, the Mariners fired executive vice president of baseball operations and general manager Bill Bavasi and replaced him with Lee Pelekoudas on an interim basis. The Mariners own the majors worst record at 24-46.

The Marlins raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first. After Hanley Ramirez grounded out to begin the contest, Silva yielded back-to-back singles to Hermida and Jorge Cantu. Jacobs then reached on an infield single when his bouncer deflected off Sexson's glove and caromed into shallow right field, allowing Hermida to score. A walk to Uggla loaded the bases, and Cantu dashed home on Gonzalez's sacrifice fly.

Seattle loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth on walks to Adrian Beltre and Raul Ibanez and a single by Sexson. A sacrifice fly by Johjima put the Mariners on the board, but Miller got Willie Bloomquist and Yuniesky Betancourt to fly out to avoid further damage.

Meanwhile, Silva really settled into a groove, retiring 12 batters in a row before Matt Treanor dumped a double into right field with one away in the fifth. Ramirez then singled to put runners on the corners for Hermida, who hit a ground ball to second base. Ramirez was forced out at second on the play, but first base umpire Bill Welke ruled Hermida had beaten Betancourt's relay throw, allowing a run to score and eliminating a potential inning-ending double play.

An irate Silva argued the call and was subsequently ejected, although replays appeared to show the runner was out. Ryan Rowland-Smith took over the mound duties and struck out Jacobs to finish the frame.

"It was a bang-bang play at first and Silva's an emotional guy," Seattle manager John McLaren said. "(First base umpire) Bill (Welke) said he cussed him."

Uggla led off the sixth with a single, advanced to third when Wes Helms stroked a base hit to left field and scampered home on Ross' sac fly for a 4-1 Marlins lead.

Florida extended its lead further with two runs in the seventh. Roy Corcoran started the inning for Seattle and surrendered a lead-off single to Ramirez. Hermida then beat out a high chopper to the pitcher, and both runners advanced on Corcoran's throwing error. After Cantu grounded out, Jacobs was intentionally walked and Uggla poked a base hit between third and short that scored one run. Gonzalez followed with an RBI single up the middle that made it a 6-1 game. Sean Green replaced Corcoran and fanned Helms and Ross to end the inning.
