Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Josh Beckett combined with two other pitchers in a six-hit shutout as the Boston Red Sox closed out a three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds with a 9-0 win.
Beckett (7-4) gave up six hits and two walks with six strikeouts to improve to 9-1 in his last 10 interleague starts.
Coco Crisp hit a two-run home run and drove in four runs while Dustin Pedroia hit a solo shot and added another RBI for the Red Sox, who have won four of their last five games.
Boston was without slugger Manny Ramirez, who is nursing a sore hamstring suffered in the series opener on Friday. Jacoby Ellsbury took his spot in left field and filled in admirably, going 3-for-5 with a solo home run, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Ellsbury now has 33 steals on the season and set a Boston rookie record.
Homer Bailey (0-3) lost for his third consecutive start and saw his earned-run average balloon to 8.76 as he gave up five runs on four hits with three walks in just 2 1/3 innings of work for the Reds, who have dropped four of their last six. Joey Votto got three of the six hits.
Boston worked a run in the first thanks to the speed of Ellsbury, who led off with a single, stole second then third and came home on a sacrifice fly from Pedroia for a 1-0 lead.
The Red Sox tacked on two more runs in the second as Jason Varitek worked a one-out walk and Crisp followed with a shot into the right field stands for a 3-0 advantage.
Ellsbury led off the third with a solo home run and two batters later J.D. Drew followed with a shot over the right field wall for a 5-0 Boston lead. After Mike Lowell followed with a walk, Bailey was pulled from the game in favor of Jeremy Affeldt.
The Red Sox continued to pour it on in the fifth. With runners on first and second, Kevin Youkilis punched a single to left to score Drew.
Gary Majewski then took the mound and walked Varitek to load the bases before Crisp punched a single to left that scored Lowell and Youkilis for an 8-0 lead.
Pedroia's solo homer in the sixth gave Boston to a 9-0 lead.
Beckett was superb through the first six innings, only allowing runners to reach second base in the first and second innings. He was in a bit of trouble in the seventh as the first two batters singled, but he got Paul Bako to fly out and Jay Bruce to ground into a double play to kill the threat.
David Aardsma worked the eighth inning while Mike Timlin pitched a perfect ninth to complete the shutout.
