Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Oscar Salazar led off the bottom of the ninth with the tying homer and Ramon Hernandez singled in the winning run with two outs, as the Baltimore Orioles earned an 8-7 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Brian Roberts had two doubles and two RBI, as Baltimore won its second consecutive game to climb above .500 (34-33). Nick Markakis belted a two-run homer for the Orioles, who will go for the interleague series sweep Sunday.
George Sherrill (2-1) picked up the win despite suffering his third blown save of the season. Radhames Liz started his third game this year allowing four runs on four hits while striking out five in 6 1/3 innings.
"George Sherrill has meant so much to this team, that the guys came back like they did, not once, not twice, but three times," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "I appreciate what everybody is doing. It's incredible the fight that is in this team."
Matt Capps (0-2) entered the ninth with a one-run lead, but for the fourth time on the night Pittsburgh blew a lead. Capps allowed both runs on two hits and one walk. Zach Duke, who has yet to win a game on the road this year, went six innings, giving up four runs on nine hits.
Adam LaRoche was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer while Xavier Nady was also 2-for-4 with a solo shot. Jose Bautista belted a three-run homer, while Freddy Sanchez added a solo blast for the Pirates, who had won four of five entering this series.
Nady left the game in the ninth with an apparent left shoulder injury after running into the wall down the first base line attempting to catch a foul ball.
Salazar hit a first-pitch homer, his first this season, to left field to start the Baltimore ninth. Freddie Bynum walked two batters later, then stole second with two outs. Hernandez then hit a ball to the gap in left-center to score Bynum easily for the game-winning run.
"It's unbelievable. I was just looking for a good pitch to hit and try to hit the ball as best I can," Salazar said. "As soon as the ball left my bat, I knew the ball was gone."
Salazar pinch-hit for Melvin Mora in the first inning after he fouled a pitch off his left knee, causing a contusion. Mora is listed as day-to-day.
Nady gave Pittsburgh an early lead with his 10th homer of the year, a shot to dead center, in the second inning.
Adam Jones and Roberts both doubled for Baltimore in the third to tie the game. Jones led off the inning and moved to third on an Alex Cintron sacrifice bunt before Roberts' two-base hit.
A Sanchez homer put Pittsburgh back up 2-1 in the fourth.
Jones and Roberts answered again in the fifth to erase another one-run deficit. Jones singled to open the inning and scored on Roberts' second double.
Baltimore then grabbed its first lead in the sixth on a Cintron two-out, two- run double. However, Hernandez was tagged out at the plate to end the inning.
Bautista blasted Pittsburgh's third homer with two outs in the seventh to put the visiting team back up, 5-4. Ryan Doumit walked to begin the inning and moved to second on a LaRoche single two batters later before Bautista's shot off reliever Matt Albers.
In the bottom half, Markakis homered a few feet inside the pole over the scoreboard in right field to bring Baltimore back from its third deficit of the game. Roberts singled to begin the inning and stole second before scoring on Markakis' 11th homer of the year.
LaRoche took a Sherrill pitch over the right field scoreboard, very close to where Markakis' landed, to give Pittsburgh its fourth lead on its fourth home run of the game. Nady, who singled to begin the ninth, also scored on the play.
