St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Jason Bartlett's two-run single led the way as Tampa Bay topped intra-state rival Florida, 4-1, in the second of a three-game interleague set.
Jonny Gomes homered in his return from a five-game suspension for the Rays, who have won the first two games in the series.
Starter Matt Garza (5-3) got the win, scattering three hits and one run over seven innings, fanning three with a walk. Troy Percival worked a scoreless final frame for his 15th save.
"I liked his demeanor tonight," said Rays manager Joe Maddon of Garza. "To do as well as he did against them is a big growth moment for him."
Mike Jacobs knocked in the lone run for the Marlins, who have dropped three straight.
Mark Hendrickson (7-5) suffered the loss for Florida despite yielding only four hits and three runs with six strikeouts over five innings.
"The pitches got to him, he had 100 pitches in five innings," said Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez on cutting Hendrickson's outing short. "I think if we go out and and we score a couple runs maybe he'll pitch a little better, more aggressive."
Tampa forged ahead in its fourth-inning turn.
B.J. Upton began the frame with a base hit, then stole second. Willy Aybar walked two batters later, and both runners advanced on a double steal. Gomes struck out but Gabe Gross walked to load the bases, and Bartlett came through with a single to center which scored two and gave the Rays a 3-1 lead.
Florida went down in order in the fifth and sixth, and Garza finished his outing by working around a walk to Luis Gonzalez in the seventh.
The Rays loaded the bases with none out in the home seventh on walks to Gross and Akinori Iwamura sandwiched around Bartlett's plunking by Doug Waechter. Justin Ruggiano grounded into a 4-6-3 double play but Gross plated Tampa's fourth run.
Dan Wheeler hurled a scoreless eighth and Percival retired the side in order in the ninth to lock up the win.
A solo homer by Gomes in the second inning staked the Rays to an early lead, then a sacrifice fly from Jacobs in the fourth evened the score.
