Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Armando Galarraga continued a breakthrough season, pitching seven shutout innings as the Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-0, in the opener of a three-game interleague set at Comerica Park.
Galarraga (6-2) allowed three hits, walked one and struck out five to win his third consecutive decision. The right-hander, who reached the big leagues with the Texas Rangers in 2007 and was largely non-descript, allowing eight hits and six runs in 8 2/3 innings over two relief appearances, has won six of his 11 starts this year.
"He was in command pretty good all night," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said of his starter. "He was throwing strikes, mixed his pitches very well."
Freddy Dolsi threw a perfect final two innings for his second save.
Magglio Ordonez belted a two-run homer and Marcus Thames added a solo shot for the Tigers, who have won four in a row and six of seven. Shortstop Michael Hollimon, in his second major league game, recorded his first RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Juan Pierre, Russell Martin and James Loney had the only hits for the Dodgers, losers of three in a row and seven of their last 10 games.
Derek Lowe (4-6), a native of Dearborn, Michigan, was tagged with the loss as he surrendered eight hits and three runs -- two earned -- over seven innings. The right-hander, who logged five strikeouts, fell to 7-2 lifetime against Detroit.
The start of the game was delayed 65 minutes by rain.
Loney tripled with two outs in the second, but was left stranded when Mark Sweeney struck out.
The Tigers finally went ahead in the fifth when Thames, who made a running catch at the wall in the first, led off with his eighth homer of the season, a shot to left-center field. Ryan Raburn singled with one out, Curtis Granderson doubled, and Hollimon lofted a sacrifice fly to left field.
Miguel Cabrera doubled in the sixth and scored on a two-out error by Loney at first. The ball went under Loney's glove as he tried to field it off the bat of Thames.
Tempers flared in the eighth inning when Guillen was hit on the right tricep by a Cory Wade pitch. Guillen pointed at the pitcher as he made his way to first base and the benches emptied, but there were no further hostilities. Ordonez followed by belting a 2-0 pitch over the wall in left for his 10th homer of the year.
"I don't have a clue what happened," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "I don't know what's happening, a batter gets hit and it starts a war. It was just one of those things."
Galarraga received a scare in the sixth inning when Pierre lined a ball off his right ankle. Galarraga tumbled to the ground, but remained in the game.
"It's good right now, but I don't know about tomorrow," Galarraga said. "It's good. I don't think it's anything to worry about."
