Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Matt Stairs and Scott Rolen both homered in a three-run third inning, as the Toronto Blue Jays edged the Chicago Cubs, 3-2, in the opener of a three-game interleague set at the Rogers Centre.
Stairs drove in two runs and Rolen the other while Alex Rios added three hits, scoring once for Toronto, which has played the victor in two of three.
A.J. Burnett (6-6) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, settling down until he was pulled in the sixth with 111 pitches. The right-hander finished allowing two runs on four hits through five-plus innings. Burnett struck out seven, snapping a three-start winless streak. Toronto's bullpen tossed four scoreless frames to preserve the victory.
"It really was a good ball game after a couple of tough ones," Jays manager John Gibbons remarked. "It was good to see the bullpen bounce back, especially B.J. (Ryan) with the save."
Sean Gallagher (3-3) had a costly third inning but pitched well otherwise as the starter, surrendering three runs and seven hits over five-plus innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out five for Chicago, which saw a four- game winning streak snapped.
Kosuke Fukudome was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring twice while Jim Edmonds was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.
"We had some opportunities," Cubs outfielder Eric Patterson said. "We had a lot of guys on base and we just couldn't get the big hit when we needed to."
Toronto wasted a leadoff double by Rios in the first but Stairs made the Cubs pay for Rios' third-inning double, launching a two-run homer to the second deck in right field. Rolen followed up Stairs by golfing a solo shot to left, giving the Jays a 3-0 lead.
The Cubs got one back in the fourth. Fukudome slapped a one-out single to left and Edmonds doubled off the top of the wall in right-center two batters later, bringing Fukudome around to score.
Chicago cut the lead to one in the sixth. Fukudome singled back up the middle to start the frame and Burnett walked Geovany Soto to end his outing. Brian Wolfe came on and allowed an infield single to Edmonds, loading the bases with no outs. After a Mark DeRosa strikeout, Patterson stroked a single to right scoring one but Ryan Theriot grounded into an inning-ending double play.
B.J. Ryan came on for Toronto in the ninth and worked around a two-out walk to Derrek Lee for his 14th save of the season.
