American League Game Summary - Seattle at Toronto

Final Score: Seattle 2 - Toronto 1

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Felix Hernandez tossed eight brilliant innings, and Raul Ibanez drove in the winning run with a single in the top of the ninth as the Seattle Mariners edged the Toronto Blue Jays, 2-1, in the rubber match of their three-game series at Rogers Centre.

Hernandez (5-5) allowed an unearned run on four hits, striking out eight and walking one as the M's won for just the third time in their last 10 games. Brandon Morrow came on for an injured J.J. Putz in the ninth to notch his first career save.

Yuniesky Betancourt added a run-scoring triple for Seattle, while Jose Vidro collected a pair of singles.

"A lot of stuff has been going on and it's been tough," Ibanez said. "We're able to scratch and claw, and leave (the road trip) .500"

Joe Inglett doubled twice and scored for the Jays, who have dropped six of their last eight games. B.J. Ryan (1-3) allowed the go-ahead run in the ninth to take the loss in relief of Shaun Marcum, who held the M's to a run on seven hits over seven brilliant frames, striking out nine and walking two.

"I'm more concerned about the team winning, unfortunately things didn't work out today," Marcum said.

With the game tied 1-1, Ichiro Suzuki created the havoc against Ryan in the eighth, walking with one out and stealing second and third with two outs and Miguel Cairo at the plate. Cairo walked and stole second, and Ibanez hooked a single to right that plated the go-ahead run, with Ibanez advancing to second on the throw.

Ryan and Jays manager John Gibbons were ejected after the hit for arguing with plate umpire Andy Fletcher, but Shawn Camp came on to end the inning.

"I went there and reacted to it, questioned some borderline pitches, that's all," Gibbons said.

Putz walked Inglett to start the home half, and after getting ahead of Vernon Wells, 1-2, was pulled with an apparent elbow injury. Morrow came on to finish off the strikeout of Wells, then caught Matt Stairs looking. Lyle Overbay launched a fly ball to deep left-center, but Ibanez made the catch just in front of the wall to end the game.

After being blanked through six frames, the M's began to catch up with Marcum in the top of the seventh. Jeremy Reed and Richie Sexson started the inning with consecutive singles, but an attempted sacrifice bunt cost the Mariners two outs. Kenji Johjima attempted to lay down the bunt, but popped it up to Curtis Thigpen, who picked it out of the air then fired directly to second to retire Reed, who was wandering off the bag. The blunder cost the Mariners the lead, as Betancourt followed with a triple to right-center that scored Sexson and tied the game, 1-1, before Marcum retired the side.

Scott Downs came on for Marcum in the eighth, but walked three to load the bases with two outs. However, Johjima lined out to center as the game remained deadlocked.

Neither offense could muster much production until the bottom of the fourth, when Inglett chopped a leadoff double down the line in right and advanced to third when Reed misplayed the ball's carom off the stands. One out later, Inglett came in to score the game's first run when Stairs grounded out to second.

The Jays threatened in the home sixth when David Eckstein singled with one out and Inglett followed with a double, but couldn't capitalize.
