Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in for the Detroit Tigers, who beat the Chicago White Sox, 6-4, in the opener of a three-game set.
Placido Polanco also had three hits and scored twice for the Tigers, who have won three of four. Ivan Rodriguez and Brent Clevlen each had two hits, with Clevlen adding an RBI.
Nate Robertson (4-6) took the win as he went 6 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on eight hits. Todd Jones earned his 11th save with a scoreless ninth.
Jim Thome went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and scored twice for the White Sox, who saw their seven-game win streak halted. Alexei Ramirez and AJ Pierzynski each had two hits and an RBI in defeat.
Jose Contreras (6-4) took the loss as he was touched for six runs on 13 hits in six frames of work.
Polanco and Carlos Guillen singled to start off the seventh, and Magglio Ordonez followed with an RBI single to give Detroit a 6-3 lead.
Chicago got one back in the eighth. Pierzynski led off the frame with a double and Carlos Quentin put runners on the corners with a single. Then, with Paul Konerko batting, Freddy Dolsi advanced the runners with a balk and the Sox were within 6-4.
Jones came in for the ninth and walked Nick Swisher, but got Joe Crede to ground into a double play. Ramirez singled to left field to keep Chicago alive, but Orlando Cabrera flied out to end the game.
"We were just one hit away from winning this game," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We're swinging the bats really well and when you're doing that, you're going to win a lot more games."
With none on and one out in the second inning, Thome deposited a 3-2 curveball over the fence in right-center.
Chicago made it 2-0 in the third. Ramirez worked a one-out walk and, after Orlando Cabrera popped out, stole second base. Pierzynski then clubbed an RBI single to right, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.
Detroit got a run on the board in the fourth. Miguel Cabrera hit a ground-rule double down the right field line and scored as Jeff Larish singled to right field.
"I was just looking for a good pitch to hit and battling when it got to two strikes," Larish said.
The Tigers took a 4-2 lead in the fifth. Clevlen and Curtis Granderson began the inning with consecutive singles, and Polanco followed with an RBI single. Guillen offered a sac bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Ordonez flied out for the second out, but Miguel Cabrera belted a two-run single to center.
Rodriguez hit a double to left in the sixth and Clevlen brought him home with a single. The Tigers were sitting on a 5-2 cushion heading into the seventh frame.
The ChiSox inched closer in the seventh, as Thome singled, Swisher doubled and Crede walked to load the bases in the frame with one out. Dolsi then came on in relief and got Ramirez to ground into an RBI force out and Orlando Cabrera flied out to end the threat.
