National League Game Summary - Cincinnati at Florida

Final Score: Cincinnati 9 - Florida 4

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Ken Griffey, Jr. joined elite company with his 600th career home run, highlighting Cincinnati's 9-4 victory over Florida in the finale of a four-game set.

The 413-foot milestone was a 3-1 offering from Mark Hendrickson (7-4), a down-and-in breaking pitch that hung in Griffey, Jr.'s wheelhouse and was deposited deep into the right-field seats tight to the line.

The round-tripper was Griffey's seventh of the season. He had been sitting on No. 599 since a two-run, first-inning blast off Atlanta's Jair Jurrjens on May 31.

"It was awesome," said Reds manager Dusty Baker. "I am praised and proud to be the manager here when he reached the milestone."

Griffey is first among active players with 600 homers, with home-run king Barry Bonds (762) and Sammy Sosa (609) not currently a part of a major league roster. The 600-home run club also includes Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth and Willie Mays.

The next active player behind Griffey on the all-time list is Alex Rodriguez (528), who currently sits at 15th, six behind Jimmie Foxx.

"I got a pitch I could hit and it went out for me," said a simple-stated Griffey, Jr. "I'm glad it's over."

Griffey, Jr.'s milestone overshadowed a power perfect night for catcher Paul Bako, a veteran journeyman who hit two home runs and drove home five runs in the victory.

Edinson Volquez (9-2) was the recipient of the power display, pitching six solid innings with three runs allowed on three hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Brandon Phillips hit a solo home run and Edwin Encarnacion scored twice for the Reds, who salvaged a split in the four-game series in south Florida.

Hendrickson gave up six runs -- five earned -- on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 2 1/3 frames. The southpaw also lost to Volquez and the Reds on May 13 and dropped his third straight start.

Jeremy Hermida drove home a pair of runs for the Marlins, who committed three errors and dropped four games behind idle and National League East-leading Philadelphia.

Griffey, Jr. clobbered a hanging down-and-in breaking ball tight to the line and out into the right-field seats -- the magic 600th home run -- for a 2-0 lead in the first.

"Last week it was (Braves) Chipper (Jones) hitting (homer) number 400 and today it's (Ken) Griffey hitting 600," said Florida outfielder Luis Gonzalez. "Obviously, those are huge milestones for those players, individually, and if they hit (them), you would like to see us on the winning end of the stick, not on the losing side."

Jerry Hairston, who singled and stole a pair of bases in front of Griffey, Jr.'s home run, left the game after that half-inning with a fractured left thumb. Paul Janish replaced Hairston and finished 0-for-4.

The Reds again played long ball in the second frame. Encarnacion reached on a fielding error, Joey Votto was plunked by a pitch and Bako drove his fifth homer of the season out to center field for the 5-0 lead. Brandon Phillips followed an inning later, rocking a high fastball over the high scoreboard in left-center field for the 6-0 edge.

Florida put a three-spot on the scoreboard in the home half of the fifth. Gonzalez started the outburst with a solid single and Matt Treanor coaxed a one-out walk. Hanley Ramirez walked with two outs and Hermida's hot shot ate up Votto at first, going under his glove for a run-scoring hit.

Jorge Cantu's single followed, scoring Ramirez with the frame's third run.

It was Florida's turn to play long ball in the eighth, as Mike Jacobs stroked his 14th home run of the campaign. Jay Bruce saved further trouble by making a running, lunging catch of a foul ball tight to the bullpen fence in right to end the frame.

Adam Dunn scored on Votto's sacrifice fly and Bako punctuated the contest with a two-run home run off the right-field pole in the ninth to wrap up the scoring.
