Boston, MA (Sports Network) - J.D. Drew homered and knocked in two runs, and Justin Masterson allowed just three hits over six sterling innings as the Boston Red Sox edged the Seattle Mariners, 2-1, in the rubber match of their three-game series at Fenway Park.
Masterson (3-0) allowed just one run, striking out four and walking three for the Red Sox, who have won five of six overall and 15 of their last 16 at home. Jonathan Papelbon worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to notch his 18th save.
"You feel good because you're giving the team an opportunity to win," Masterson said. "I think that's the idea of any starting pitcher who goes out there and any guy who comes up."
Julio Lugo went 1-for-3 with a double, while Coco Crisp singled and scored as the Red Sox won despite managing just five hits.
Sean Green (1-2) took the loss for the Mariners, losers in six of their last seven, after allowing a run on three hits over 2 1/3 innings in relief of Erik Bedard, who didn't factor in the decision after holding Boston to a run on two hits over five frames. Jamie Burke, Jose Lopez and Willie Bloomquist had the only hits for the Mariners.
With the game tied 1-1, Green came on to start the sixth when Bedard was lifted after 99 pitches, but Drew immediately greeted the right-hander by crushing a 1-2 fastball just over the wall in straight-away center.
"I kept the ball down, but he's a pretty good down ball hitter so he got it good and it went out," Green said. "Usually, I keep the ball on the ground but he got a good piece of bat on it and he's been hot and he got me."
The Red Sox couldn't add any insurance runs, but Craig Hansen and Hideki Okajima kept Seattle scoreless through the eighth, and Papelbon needed just five pitches to toss a perfect ninth.
Masterson walked Adrian Beltre and Jeremy Reed to start the second, with Beltre heading to third when Drew made a running catch on Richie Sexson's deep fly ball to right-center. Yuniesky Betancourt then hit a grounder to short, but beat out a double play to allow Beltre to score.
A single by Crisp and walks to Brandon Moss and Dustin Pedroia loaded the bases with two outs in the home third, before Bedard plunked Drew on the right forearm to force in the tying run.
"That third inning was a big part of the game," said Seattle manager John McLaren. "They really made (Bedard) work hard in the third inning."
