Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Ryan Braun and Gabe Kapler each went 2-for-5 and drove in a run, while the Colorado Rockies missed three opportunities to tie the game in the late innings as the Milwaukee Brewers held on for a 3-2 win and avoided a three-game sweep at Coors Field.
Bill Hall also knocked in a run for the Brewers, who snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the seventh time in nine games. Joe Dillon doubled, walked three times and scored twice, while Corey Hart was 2-for-5 with a double.
Jeff Suppan (4-4) held the Rockies to two runs -- one earned -- on four hits in 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win, walking five and striking out three. Salomon Torres recorded the final five outs for his seventh save.
"I thought the eighth was going to be mine, possibly the ninth," Torres said. "I already had it set in my mind that I was going to face six or seven hitters."
Chris Iannetta went 1-for-3 with a run batted in and a run scored for the Rockies, who had their four-game win streak snapped. Garrett Atkins doubled and scored a run, but the Rockies were just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 men on base.
Jeff Francis (2-6) dropped the decision after allowing all three runs on seven hits in six frames, walking four and fanning four. Francis also added an RBI single.
The Brewers jumped ahead in the top of the first with RBI singles from Braun and Hall. Dillon led off with a walk, and Kapler followed with a single. Braun ripped a single that scored Dillon, but Kapler was thrown out at third on the play. Two batters later, Hall lined a single to center to plate Braun.
"The rest of the game I made good pitches, and got ground ball outs," Francis said. "I got outs with men on base, but just couldn't do it in the first inning."
Milwaukee added another run in the second as Dillon worked a two-out walk, stole second and scored when Kapler smashed a single to left.
Colorado rallied in the bottom of the inning, as Iannetta and Ian Stewart drew walks to start the frame. Stewart was forced out on Omar Quintanilla's grounder, but Francis grounded a single to right that scored Iannetta.
Suppan held the Rockies in check until the sixth, when Atkins smashed a liner off J.J. Hardy's glove and into shallow left for a leadoff double. One out later, Atkins headed to third on a passed ball, and Iannetta hooked a line single to left, bringing the run home and cutting the deficit to 3-2. But, Carlos Villanueva came on in relief and got Stewart to ground into a rally- killing 4-6-3 double play.
Jeff Baker lined a one-out single off Villanueva in the seventh, and Scott Podsednik followed with a grounder to second. Dillon attempted to flip to second and start a double play, but misfired and allowed Podsednik and pinch- runner Aaron Cook to reach safely. Seth Smith walked to load the bases, but Villanueva caught Todd Helton looking and induced Atkins to ground out to short to end the inning and preserve the lead.
Brad Hawpe led off the home eighth with a single to center off Brian Shouse, and advanced to second on Kapler's error. Iannetta's flyout to right moved Hawpe to third with one out, and Torres got the call to relieve Shouse. Torres walked pinch-hitter Ryan Spilborghs, but Quintanilla tapped back to the mound and Hawpe was ran down for the second out. Torres then retired pinch-hitter Jonathan Herrera to keep the Rockies off the board.
Torres followed with a perfect ninth to lock up the win.
"I have a lot of confidence in those guys, and the bullpen did a tremendous job," Suppan said. "It was a real team win."
