Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Bobby Abreu belted a two-run homer and Jason Giambi broke a sixth-inning tie with a solo blast, as the New York Yankees went on to a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the third of a four- game set at Yankee Stadium.
Alex Rodriguez doubled in two runs for the Yankees, who have won two in a row after dropping the series-opener and moved over .500 at 32-31. They haven't been more than one game over the .500 mark since improving to 12-10 after an April 23 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Johnny Damon, on the heels of a 6-for-6 effort that included the game-winning hit in Saturday's 12-11 slugfest, was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored on Sunday. Abreu finished with three runs batted in and scored twice for New York.
Joba Chamberlain made his second start for the Yankees and was much improved over his last outing. After working just 2 1/3 innings five days ago against Toronto, Chamberlain made it into the fifth on Sunday. He was limited to a pitch count of about 75 and threw 78, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
"It felt better [than the first start]," said Chamberlain, who will likely see his pitch count rise to about 90 for his next scheduled start on Friday at Houston. "As a competitor, you want to get as deep as you can in a game."
Dan Giese (1-1), who took the loss in relief of Chamberlain against the Blue Jays, this time earned his first big league win. He tossed 2 2/3 innings of hitless ball, striking out three without a walk.
"It's a great win for Dan Giese," said Yankee manager Joe Girardi. "He did an outstanding job coming in for Joba."
Jose Guillen, after belting two homers and driving in seven runs Saturday, added another home run on Sunday for the Royals, losers in 17 of their last 20.
Kansas City starter Zack Greinke (5-4) blanked the Yankees over eight innings back on April 9, but took the loss in this one. He was charged with four runs on six hits with four walks and six strikeouts in five-plus innings.
The Yankees trailed 3-2, but tied it in the fifth when Damon led off with a triple past a diving David DeJesus in left field and scored on a one-out grounder to second by Abreu.
Giambi then put New York in front to lead off the sixth, drilling a 3-2 breaking ball from Greinke into the right field bleachers for his 14th homer of the season. He hit 14 home runs all of last season.
"Hanging curveball," Greinke said of the pitch to Giambi. "It was like the fourth one I gave him and he hit it. The others he hit foul, that one he kept fair."
New York tacked on two more against Ron Mahay in the seventh. Damon led off with a single and took third on a one-out base hit to right by Abreu. Rodriguez then drilled a pitch off the base of the wall in left field to score both runners for a 6-3 edge.
Jose Veras worked around a two-out single by Guillen in the eighth and Mariano Rivera tossed a perfect ninth for his 16th save in as many opportunities.
Chamberlain threw 38 pitches in the first inning of his last outing, but on Sunday needed only 13 to retire the Royals in the first.
"He mixed his stuff a little bit more today," Girardi remarked about Chamberlain. "He did a good job today."
The Yankees quickly gave him a lead in the bottom of the inning. Derek Jeter singled with one out and Abreu followed with a drive into the upper deck in right field for his eighth homer of the season. The Yankees went on to put two more on base, but Giambi struck out and Kansas City center fielder Joey Gathright made a leaping catch at the wall on Jorge Posada's drive to left- center field to end the inning.
Kansas City answered with a run in the second. Alex Gordon led off with a single to snap an 0-for-14 skid and raced to third on a one-out base hit by Ross Gload. After Mike Aviles struck out, Chamberlain uncorked a high fastball that Posada could not handle and the passed ball allowed Gordon to score.
Guillen put the Royals on top with a two-run homer in the third. DeJesus led off with a double, but Chamberlain retired the next two batters before Guillen drilled a hanging slider into the left field seats for his 10th homer and a 3-2 lead.
