Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Placido Polanco went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs to lead the Detroit Tigers past the Cleveland Indians, 5-2, in the third installment of a four-game set.
Miguel Cabrera also went 2-for-4 and had one RBI for the Tigers, who have won two in a row on the heels of a four-game skid. Curtis Granderson notched his eighth home run of the year, a solo shot in the second inning, and Ivan Rodriguez drove in Detroit's other run.
Armando Galarraga (5-2) threw 5 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Galarraga has now tossed at least five innings in each of his nine starts this season. Todd Jones earned his 10th save of the year with a perfect ninth. The save moves Jones into a tie with Tom Henke (311) for 16th place on the all- time list.
Shin-Soo Choo scored a run and had a double, the only extra-base hit for Cleveland, which has dropped two in a row and three of four. Grady Sizemore and Ryan Garko had a hit and an RBI each in defeat.
Jeremy Sowers (0-1) absorbed the loss as he was touched for five runs on seven hits in four frames.
"He didn't have his command," Cleveland manager Eric Wedge said of Sowers. "They made him work and he couldn't put his pitches where he wanted them. He wasn't aggressive enough and they put him on the defensive all day."
Detroit took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Polanco slugged a one-out double to left field, and Marcus Thames followed with a walk. After Magglio Ordonez popped out, Cabrera connected on an RBI single.
Granderson's two-out, opposite field home run gave Detroit a 2-0 lead in the second.
"I really had a tough time against them (lefties) last year, but I need to grind away at it," Granderson said. "I don't care about the numbers, I'm just trying to get some good swings against everyone."
The Indians cut their deficit in half in the third inning. Choo hit a double to center and moved to third as Cabrera flied out to right. Sizemore then belted a single off the wall in right, plating Choo.
Carlos Guillen led the fourth off with a double and Rodriguez followed with an RBI single. Brent Clevlen followed with a walk before Granderson flied out. Edgar Renteria advanced both runners into scoring position with a ground out and Polanco made it 5-1 with a two-run single.
Cleveland put another run on the board in the sixth. Sizemore started the frame with a walk. Franklin Gutierrez flied out, but Victor Martinez worked another walk. Garko kept it going with an RBI single and Jhonny Peralta grounded into a force, leaving runners at the corners. Casey Fossum was called on in relief and retired pinch-hitter Ben Francisco to end the threat.
The Indians had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the eighth as the bases were loaded with only one out. However, the Tigers called Freddy Dolsi in from the bullpen and he got Peralta swinging and caught Francisco looking at the third strike to thwart the rally.
Jones took the hill for Detroit in the ninth and got Blake to ground out. Choo and Polanco followed suit with grounders to Polanco, and the Tigers sealed the deal.
