Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Vernon Wells had three hits, including a solo home run, as the Toronto Blue Jays held on to defeat Baltimore, 5-4, and avoid a three-game sweep by the Orioles.
Marco Scutaro added two runs batted in for the Blue Jays, who also snapped a four-game losing streak. Rod Barajas finished with two doubles and an RBI and in the win.
Roy Halladay (8-5) grinded through 7 2/3 innings in earning the win. The veteran righty gave up four runs on eight hits, while striking out seven and not allowing a walk. He is now 17-4 in 27 career games versus Baltimore. B.J. Ryan, who blew his last two save opportunities, retired the side in the ninth to earn his 13th save of the season.
"When you're playing well and losing games, it definetly makes it a little tougher to be able to have a game like today where we did battle back," Halladay said. "We did overcome some things. It's good for us and hopefully can carry us forward."
Luke Scott had a pair of homers and three RBI for the Orioles, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Despite the loss, Baltimore has won five of its last seven.
Radhames Liz went five innings in earning a no-decision, surrendering two runs on four hits. The hard-throwing right-hander, who was making his second start of the season, struck out three and walked three. Matt Albers (3-2) was tagged with the loss after being touched for three runs on two hits in one inning of work.
With the Orioles holding a 4-2 lead through 5 1/2 innings, the Blue Jays scored three times in the home half of the sixth. Wells' solo homer to left got Toronto to within a run and Lyle Overbay followed with a walk. Barajas then lined a run-scoring double to left and advanced to third on a fly out by Brad Wilkerson. Scutaro's sacrifice fly to center chased home another run, making it a 5-4 game.
Toronto attempted to get some insurance in the eighth. Barajas laced a two-out double down the left field line and Wilkerson was given an intentional walk, but Scutaro lined out to right to end the threat.
Ryan was then brought on for the ninth and retired the Orioles in order to preserve the win.
After a scoreless first inning, Baltimore got on the board in the top of the second when Scott hammered an 0-1 fastball over the right field wall to give the Orioles the early 1-0 lead.
Toronto, however, responded with a pair in the home half of the second. Wells got things started with a base hit and two outs later Wilkerson drew a walk. Scutaro then grounded a single to right to tie the game, putting runners on the corners. The Blue Jays converted a double steal to perfection. With John McDonald at the plate, Scutaro stole second and, as Orioles catcher Ramon Hernandez attempted throw him out, Wilkerson easily swiped home.
Melvin Mora's run-scoring single in the top half of the third tied things at 2-2.
Toronto then loaded the bases with two down in the bottom of the frame, but Barajas fouled out to the catcher to end the threat.
Baltimore reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth, putting two on the board. Aubrey Huff was hit by a pitch with one out and, after Kevin Millar popped out to first, Scott lined a two-run homer to right-center to give the O's a 4-2 lead.
