Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Pat Burrell finished 2-for-4 with a home run, and the Philadelphia bullpen threw 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to lead the Phillies to a 6-2 win over the Atlanta Braves.
Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer, Carlos Ruiz added a solo shot, and Chase Utley went 2-for-3 with an RBI triple for Philadelphia, which has won the first two of this three-game set. Jayson Werth was activated from the disabled list prior to the game and finished with a pair of hits.
Kyle Kendrick struggled with his control and went just 5 1/3 frames while walking five, though he surrendered two runs on four hits for the Phillies, who have also won six of seven. Ryan Madson, Tom Gordon and Brad Lidge each had a scoreless inning out of the bullpen, while J.C. Romero (4-1) picked up the win after getting the final two outs of the seventh.
"My command was a little off," Kendrick said. "I like to pitch deeper into games, but tonight was good. We won the game, that's all that matters."
Philadelphia improved to 38-26 and lead the National League East by 3 1/2 games over the Florida Marlins.
"Every game we can win is huge," Kendrick said. "We still want to come out and play hard tomorrow."
Chipper Jones, who on Thursday hit his 400th career homer, blasted a two-run shot for Atlanta, which has lost three of four overall.
Jo-Jo Reyes (2-4) took the loss after a mostly solid performance, as he gave up four runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. Reyes also struck out eight for the Braves, who, at 32-31, trail the Phillies by 5 1/2 games.
"There's a lot of baseball to play," Reyes said. "We can't put our heads down and think it's over."
Reyes remained in the game for the eighth inning with the score tied at two runs apiece, and got one out before dealing a walk to Shane Victorino. Utley then pulled a sharp hit down the right field line that went for a triple, and plated Victorino easily.
The hit ended Reyes' day, as Royce Ring came on to pitch. But Ryan Howard greeted him with a single, also down the right field line, and Utley crossed home for the 4-2 Phillies lead. Jeff Bennett replaced Ring and got the final two outs of the frame.
"I think that one walk killed me," Reyes said of his walk to Victorino. "I wasn't able to get ahead, got behind, walked him and I think that was the big key of the game.
Gordon worked around two baserunners in the home eighth and struck out the Atlanta side to usher the game to the ninth, where the Phillies picked up some insurance runs.
Ruiz walked in a seven-pitch at-bat out of the leadoff spot. Pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs struck out, but Rollins dropped his bat on a fastball down and lofting a high, two-run homer to right field.
With Philadelphia holding the 6-2 edge, Lidge closed out the game by setting the Braves down in order, all on strikeouts. The second batter, Yunel Escobar, was ejected after arguing with home plate umpire Andy Fletcher. Escobar finished the night 0-for-5.
Ruiz delivered a rare homer -- the catcher's second of the season -- in the fifth for the game's first run, blasting a leadoff shot to left.
One inning later, Burrell put the Phillies up by two with a blast to left- center field. With two outs, he slammed a fastball down, but over the plate, almost a dozen rows back for his 15th of the season.
But in the home sixth Atlanta knotted the contest. Kelly Johnson hit a one-out single, and drew Kendrick's attention on the basepath. The Phillies starter made three throws to first while getting to a full count on Jones, who took Kendrick's sixth pitch deep to straightaway center for the two-run homer.
