American League Game Summary - Kansas City at New York

Final Score: Kansas City 11 - NY Yankees 12

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Johnny Damon capped a 6-for-6 day with a game- winning RBI single in the ninth inning, as the Yankees twice erased four-run deficits in a wild 12-11 win over the Kansas City Royals in the second of a four-game set.

Damon drove in four for the Yankees, who have won three of four. Mariano Rivera (2-1) gave up a solo homer to David DeJesus in the top of the ninth, but took the win. Andy Pettitte was ripped for career-high 10 runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings.

"It was pretty amazing, pretty exhausting," Damon said. "Posada's HR gave us some life back. Hopefully this is a good time for us to get going. I've had a couple of opportunities to get the 6th hit, fortunately (today) the ball didn't curve foul for me."

Alex Rodriguez, Jason Giambi, and Jorge Posada all homered for the Yanks, who rapped a season-high 19 hits.

"Hitters get in a good groove," Yanks manager Joe Girardi said of Damon, who was 0-for-5 Friday night. "If you're a good hitter, the law of averages are going to go back in your favor."

The come-from-ahead loss ruined a career day for Jose Guillen, who homered twice, including a grand slam, and drove in a career-high seven runs. Joakim Soria (0-1) took the loss for letting up two runs in the ninth after starter Brian Bannister surrendered eight hits and five runs in 3 1/3 innings for the Royals, who have dropped four of five.

"It's difficult when you give up three late in the game," Royals skipper Trey Hillman said. "Pitching has been one of our stronger suits and we've got a lot of offense. We had a couple of key home runs and got a couple of guys on base when we needed to. We made the most of our hits, which hadn't been something that we typically have done a lot of. Unfortunately we couldn't match up our pitching."

With the game tied at 10-10, DeJesus stepped in against Rivera and jumped all over the first pitch of the ninth, which he pulled into the stands in right, his fifth homer of the season. Rivera had a streak of 15 straight batters retired -- 18 straight left-handed batters -- before DeJesus' bomb, which put the Royals in front.

Soria couldn't nail down the win for the Royals, though, as he surrendered a long solo home run to Posada with one out in the ninth. The blast stayed just fair down the line in right, again tying the game, this time at 11-11.

"We had the last at bat today so it was important for us to keep going," Posada said. "You have to try to tie it before you can win it. It was a special day, a hot one, we kept coming at them."

Robinson Cano grounded to short for the second out, but Wilson Betemit worked a walk to keep the inning alive. Melky Cabrera's nubber down the third base line stayed fair for an infield single, setting the stage for Damon. He capped his career day with a long fly ball to right, which one-hopped into the stands. Damon never touched second for his ground-rule double, however, settling for a game-winning single after Betemit crossed home.

Guillen gave the Royals the early edge when he followed a two-out Mark Teahen double with a long ball to left for a 2-0 Kansas City lead in the first. Giambi answered with a two-out RBI single on the home half, however, cutting the deficit in half.

The Royals took a 5-1 lead after four runs in the third. Joey Gathright tried to bunt himself on to start the frame, and fouled the ball back into the mask of home plate umpire Jerry Layne. The umpire stumbled backwards after the pitch, and left the field after a few minutes. The game was delayed for a bit before resuming with only three umpires, as second base umpire Jim Wolf moved behind the plate.

Once play resumed the Royals jumped on Pettitte. Mike Aviles drove in a run with a triple to center, and Pettitte then beaned Teahen. Guillen singled to left, plating Aviles, and John Buck followed a Miguel Olivo strikeout with an RBI single to center. Buck was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double, ending the inning.

The Yanks came roaring back with four runs in the fourth. Rodriguez singled and Giambi walked, and Posada lined a double to right, scoring one run. Cano's single to right plated Giambi, and Betemit brought Posada home with a sacrifice fly to center. A Damon RBI single later in the inning knotted the game at 5-5.

Giambi broke the tie game with two outs in the fifth with his 13th homer of the season, a blast deep down the line in right that landed halfway up the upper deck for a 6-5 Yankees lead.

Trailing 6-5 entering the seventh, the Royals pushed in front with five runs. Alberto Callaspo doubled to right to start the inning, and Esteban German reached on a bunt single to third. Gathright cracked a single to left, plating Callaspo with the tying run. Kansas City was far from done, though.

After a DeJesus sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third with one out, Aviles worked a walk, loading the bases. Teahen fanned for the second out of the inning, bringing Guillen to the plate.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi elected to leave the lefty Pettitte in to face the right-handed Guillen, even though Guillen had already homered, driven in three, and the laboring Pettitte was over 100 pitches. The decision proved to be a mistake, as Guillen belted a shot into the stands in left, his fourth career grand slam, and the Royals took a 10-6 lead.

Rodriguez cut the four-run deficit in half in the home half of the inning with his ninth homer of the season, a two-run blast into the grandstand seats in left with one out. Then the Yankees again knotted the game up in the eighth. Cano and Cabrera both reached on singles, and, after a Ramon Ramirez wild pitch allowed both to move up, Damon singled to left, plating both for a 10-10 deadlock.

Derek Jeter followed with a single to center, but neither Bobby Abreu nor Rodriguez could push in the go-ahead run. Abreu flied out to deep left-center, and Rodriguez grounded out to third, sending the game to the ninth tied.
